Tonight's ep of Kathy Griffin's My Life on the D List has showed me that I am now one Kevin Bacon step closer to Kathy herself!!

Not that I can tell you how that step is taken care of due to privacy concerns, but still! EEEE!

Also I have new fabric! It is pretty. That is all.

Things of a crafty nature abound here in Siam. I come bearing pictures of said items!

Shelves! )

Sock! )

Sewing! )

And that is all for now. Currently I am snuggling with kitties, and in a bit I'll toss a steak on the BBQ.

My craft blog has been updated with - wait for it - a SEWING PROJECT.

I'm just as stunned about it as you are.

(Also, as long as I'm posting links and since some people asked for reminders, there's still time to donate to help sponsor me in my walk for the Bennett Cancer Center. Save the cancer center, save the world! NO I AM NOT TIRED OF THAT JOKE YET!)

This has been a good and much needed four day weekend for me. I needed the rest like a rest-needing thing, plus I've been getting various things done that I've wanted to do for a while.

On Saturday I finally hit the farmer's market. I was worried to discover that there weren't many vendors, but one of the women there said that the problem was due to the rain this year and that it should pick up as the summer goes on.

On the upside they're letting other vendors in too, so in addition to buying some fruit for my weekend brunches I picked up some nice earrings for belly dance.

There's been library, housecleaning, the putting together of my new sewing table which I love (though have not sewn on yet), and all sorts of good things for my overall system. I feel almost human today. It's kinda neat.

1)[livejournal.com profile] mpoetess is an evil, vile temptress. SHE KNOWS WHY.

2) Tonight I go to Target to buy things to enable my new sewing lifestyle. Whee!

3) It's really frikkin' hot.

4) I had a weird dream last night. I'd share the details but whenever I get tempted to do that I always remember Ted Alexandro's routine about people telling you their dreams. ("Wasn't that weird?" "No! It's boring! There's a reason why you were asleep when it happened!")

5) BGAL starts offically this Thursday. Get your needlecraft of choice ready! :D

6) Giraffes.

Am home from [livejournal.com profile] justhuman's where a MOST spiffy weekend was had. I managed to make it to her house in spite of going down completely the wrong highway at one point and - and this is the important part - due to me being what amounts to a GUY because I would not stop and ask for directions because BY GOD THAT WOULD MEAN ADMITTING I WAS WRONG.

Can't have that.

So basically did a side trip to Ikea, where I can assure you JH does not live, righted myself, and kept on going.

JH did the monumental task of teaching me how to sew. At this she was incredibly patient, informative, helpful, and did not mock me once for what were undoubtedly thousands of stupid questions on my part. By the time I left her house I actually felt excited about the process and wanting to practice and do more. This is, of course, a vast change from my previous feelings about my sewing machine and sewing as a concept, where I was very certain one or both of them was going to eat me.

We also did fannish things such as watch some DVDs of Joss and Tim giving talks, rewatching the finale of House which I think I need to see approximately one billion times to fully appreciate all the layers and symbolism (note: I say that as a compliment), and watching X3 which I utterly adored both as a movie and because character ) and character ) were in it and while the first was obvious the second was a happy surprise and I squeed like a squeeing thing.

My one weetiny complaint about the movie is oh so minor it's not really a spoiler but then I talk about slightly more spoilery things )

But the rest of the movie was awesome and I loved it like a loving thing.

Now to sit back, relax, and assure my cats that I still love them even though I oh so cruelly abandonded them for two days.

Dance class went well last night. We practiced our choreography in the hopes that we'll do it at a performance for a street fair on June 10. This is a happy thing because now I know we're doing the June 10th thing for certain, which allows me to arrange my schedule accordingly. It'll be the first time I've done performing like this though, so we'll see how it goes.

This weekend I shall be heading into the land of [livejournal.com profile] justhuman so that I might learn how to sew. If you hear screams and cries of frustration coming from somewhere on the East Coast, that'll probably be JH beating her head against a wall for dealing with me. ;)
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Seasonal)
It's cool and rainy outside. A good day for staying home with a book.

Unfortunately I'm at work, but that doesn't mean the day stops being a good one to stay home with a book.

When I shall be home is tonight, when I am not at stupid sewing class.

I feel like I should do something silly and frivolous tonight to celebrate having the free time.

Now if only I could find a hat, and a Hawaiian shirt...

It's a cool and rainy day here in the land of Siam. Thus making it perfect for a leisurely brunch over a nice cuppa, then baking some soda bread while taking care of other chores.

All hail my lovely wife JH, who hath heard my cries of sewing frustration and is now generously allowing me to crash at her place for a weekend with the promise of showing me the basics. Between that and the helpful suggestions from CinderShadow, I am now going to drop the sewing class, and lo' did the amount of stress in my life suddenly lessen by a large degree. Huzzah. =)
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (doodle)
So I had my second sewing class. More about that )

***

Now, for those of you who wanted the answer to the previous quiz, It is.... )
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (tea)
Today began with oatmeal with a fruit compote, just because I was in the mood. It then segued into some house cleaning as I gathered up five - count 'em - five bags worth of books to donate to the library. My bookshelves now have very useful empty spaces into which I can put books that have been piling up on the floor. Depending on my time and energy tomorrow I may do the reorg then.

I'm also making vanilla cupcakes (which shall have chocolate frosting) for eating while watching the Oscars tomorrow. I shall be sharing these cupcakes with my Oscar-watching friends if they are very nice to me.

I went on my first trip to buy fabric and a pattern for my sewing class. This required going to two shops. The first was the local fabric store where the selection of fabric wasn't much to talk about but the customer service from the store owner was fabulous. I basically threw myself at her mercy as soon as I walked in the door ("Can I help you?" "GOD yes.") and came out with a skirt pattern for class, fabric, and most of the notions I needed.

The keyword "most" is what made me have to, under the store owner's suggestion, go to the not so local discount craft store. There I did find a fabric selection that was truly nifty to browse through, but the customer service was terrible. I saw a line of people waiting to get fabric cut with nobody helping them the entire time I was there. Then when I got my final notions and waited on line I waited for for ever while two customers were helped (one had a return which understandably causes delays. the other was just buying regular stuff so no clue what the holdup was). Suffice it to say it's not too likely I'll be going back there again.

Which now raises a question: What are your favorite online fabric/notion/sewing stores? I need to start building up some bookmarks here on the odd chance I turn out to be any good at this. Also where do you go online to buy bobbins and needles for your sewing machine? (I've got a Brother, if that helps)

Now to get the cupcakes out of the oven.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Jesus has quit)
Dates I'm planning to be at WriterCon: July 20-24.

Dates my sister in law just emailed me as the possible times my nephew's Baptism will be taking place in Germany: June 25-July 19.

And we're... what? Surprised by this?

*headdesk*

I'm still going to WriterCon. I figure if they can't hammer down a date I'm not going to cancel my plans, even if that does mean missing out on Germany. I'll also go to Germany if it's late June/early July as I've decided that the boss has lost the right to bitch at me about when I take my vacations, esp when he knows full well I only take them for one con a year, and then for family related things like Baptisms and weddings that are slightly out of my control. But with my luck you just know this is going to be the exact same week.

Ah well.

In good news, I have finally paid for Serenity. I own my car free and clear. Now to take those pesky car payments and apply them to the rest of my debt! 8)

Tomorrow is my very first sewing class. I'm only slightly intimidated.

Today's number is still 2.

It's been warm. This does not make me happy. It's January! There's supposed to be cold and snow, damn it!

Instead it's been 50 degrees F, and rainy.

Now I like me some rain, but not when it's winter!

Adding to the woe of my life I was thwarted in my oatmeal lifestyle this morning. I got everything ready except the one crucial mise to en place, viz. the oatmeal itself. I had some, but not enough for the recipe.

Luckily there were pancakes in the freezer to save me from starving to death but woe! WOE!!

On the up side I went shopping and now have oatmeal, so I can make it tomorrow.

Also I got pretty new yarn today! When it grows up it's going to be a scarf.

Oh! And I signed up for a sewing class. It starts at the end of February.

AAAAAAAAA!!!!!

I'm fine.

Thanks again for those who sent well-wishes on the health front. When I woke up today I was still feeling pretty crappy, but on a scale of 8 so that was better than last night. And now I'd even rate myself around a 4 or a 5. It's a chronic thing that's been kicking my ass for a while, but I am talking with my docs about it. Just have to try various things and see what works. In the meanwhile, y'all are nice to put up with my flakiness and whining.

Today's been oddly good. My boss was out of the office and surprisingly did not curse me with tons of busywork. This allowed me to clear a few things off my desk both work-wise and RL-wise. I face tonight with the scary possibility of maybe having some free time. I am mistrustful of this, yet optimistic. Perhaps there could be knitting, or an attempt to use my new sewing machine, or some writing of some sort. The mind boggles.

I also went out on my lunch break and bought a DVD nice and cheap. Fear of a Black Hat, complete with commentary. Who wants to touch me?

Speaking of sewing, now that I've got a machine to play with I'm all ears on any sewing related websites and/or LJ coms y'all might want to pimp at me. I know about craftster, though for the life of me I can't really navigate that thing. Beyond that, I am a total n00b. Consider me putty in your hands.

Been bopping around the net to catch up on Katrina related things. I'm amazed the press is keeping its spine in the face of the White House trying to play the party line of "If you dare ask us questions play the blame game then the terrorists hurricane wins." Part of me wants to say that I can't believe the WH would even try that but then again I've met this White House before.

My thanks to [livejournal.com profile] bcassie, who gifted me with LJ time. I assume this was related to her getting a perm account. I sadly do not have the money to put down on one of those m'self, so the donation is doubly appreciated. =)

On the topic of money, thanks to the evil evil [livejournal.com profile] byrne I spent last night twitching and drooling over sewing machines on Ebay. I don't know why my brain didn't previously think of getting a cheap machine to try out over there. I suppose this is my blondness in action.

Anyway, I twitched and drooled but was a good girl and did not buy yet. Okay, granted, I put a bid in on one but I stuck to a maximum that I was comfortable with and did not go over it! Not even when I got outbid by 50 cents and probably could've swooped in at the last second and paid an extra dollar, but I didn't! Willpower! Ha! (Okay also the shipping was more than I anticipated but shh!)

I've been poking at the ol' website with the vague concept that maybe this weekend I'll get around to finally updating it to... well, everything but specifically the new design and layout at the very least. You know, if you ever need to humble yourself there ain't nothing that's going to do that faster than reading some of your old writing. Granted I've always felt my writing is a work in progress and I hope it shall always be, but even still, yipes. We'll just pretend I posted rough drafts by accident, right? Right. ;)

Also: Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] ladycat777

Dude! Why did nobody tell me there was a Whole Foods like 12 min away from where I live?? People, if you can't psychically divine the things I need to know and inform me of them how on earth am I going to live my life? Seriously!

So, yeah. Apparently there's a Whole Foods 12 min from where I live. Guess where I'm going after work today?

All this relates to the concept of Thanksgiving, as it looks like it's definitely going to be at my house this year since the concept of the huge family gathering in Brooklyn proved to be too much stress for Mom's system to handle. 'twill be a small gathering of me, Mom, and Dad, which is also nice IMO. Mom and I were just talking over who would do what. This also involved me slapping Mom's hands verbally and reminding her that I like doing this stuff, and I can't do this stuff if she volunteers to bring so much that there's nothing left for me to handle. Luckily Mom's pretty good about that kind of thing. She does the initial freakout, then calms down. Usually ;)

I've gotten all sorts of nifty advice about the sewing machine. My current plan is to check out the sewing shop one town over to see if I trust the people there, and if I do then I'll take it there to be serviced and checked out. Granted I just drove by it so who knows what the inside looks like, but from the outside it looks like it's been there forever so there's a chance they'll know how to handle old machines.

The ironic thing is that the first store I went to actually had old fashioned machines in there and I know they serviced them, but since the woman I talked to was so awful I'm not going to trust them with my new baby - or give them my money in any capacity.

So there's that. In the meanwhile, the machine is protected by two attack cats! Hurt it not, or they will... purr at you, or something. My cats aren't particularly vicious.

Weee!

Freecycle.org is officially the coolest thing in the world. I joined the local mailing list yesterday and as of today I've got a half-dozen people who'd like to take some of my old computer equipment off of my hands (I ended up agreeing to give it to someone who's going to be using it for a charity that helps developmentally disabled children) and there's also someone who says they have a sewing machine that came with their house (!?) that they're not using, so I can come get it if I want.

No clue if the machine's any good, if it works, if it's comparable to a new machine or a thousand years old but still, can't beat the price. (She said she'd leave it out on her porch, so I'm assuming it's not one of those machines that's the size of a credenza).

Now I'm in the mood to go through my house to see if I can get rid of even more things. Suddenly cleaning up is fun!

Talked with mom earlier today (watch me change topics with no segue whatsoever). Apparently she's not so keen on the insanity of going to Brooklyn if we can do Thanksgiving up here. No clue if that means OB and family wouldn't be joining us, as I don't think they've got car enough to caravan their entire brood plus P-sis's mother. I told Mom I'm officially the girl with no preference on where we have it. I figure there's enough stress with these things, no reason to add to it unnecessarily.

I'm so psyched for the holidays though. The weather's turning cold, Thanksgiving's just a few weeks away, Christmas is just around the corner, there's 20 1/2 shopping days left until my birthday... good times. Good times.

Le week-end

Ran errands today that I've needed to run for weeks now. I'm going to be happy about the delay, though, because doing so caused me to drive by the city hall two towns over where I came at just the right time to see people sitting out with lawn chairs and big signs protesting Bush and the war in Iraq. It wasn't a large group, granted, but in a way that almost makes me happier. These are people who weren't deterred by small turnout, and wanted to make themselves heard in spite of it.

So that was cool. That also ends my comments about anything political related right now. From my travels in LJland (by which I mean what I see on my friends list) I can see that the phrase "long tailed cats in a room full of rocking chairs" doesn't even begin to describe how anxious, jumpy, depressed, and defensive some people are feeling. It's a lot of bad emotions going around, and with good reason. Still, sometimes the only thing to do is let people have their time to react and get it out of their system, then settle down for lively debate later on.

So - think of puppies! And kitties! And pretty naked people of whatever gender you prefer doing whatever naked activity of your choice makes you happy!

There, see? Much better.

(For the record, I'm thinking of Alexis Denisof making me cupcakes. David B. is handling the frosting.)

Speaking of clothes, or the lack therein, I finally had a chance to swing by Ye Olde Locale Sewing Machine Shoppe. Whereupon I was given Ye Olde Harde Selle by the woman I tried to talk to in order to learn what a good machine for me would be. Did you know that if you're an absolute beginner who isn't even certain if she'll like sewing and who only wants a very basic starter unit the machine to get is one that costs $1,500? It's true! Oh, sure, if you had to it's possible you could get one for $700 but come now! You don't want to start off using bad equipment, right? Besides, you can give this to your grandkids!

I tried to get her to talk to me about the cheaper models she had, but she dismissed them without so much as a look and kept pushing me on the 700/1500 machines. In hindsight I wish I'd thought to ask her why the store even bothered to have cheaper machines if they were, in her opinion, so horrible that nobody should use them, but at that point I was tired and hungry and I just wanted a sandwich. I'm torn on what to do now, though, because this place is the sewing machine shop in town and it'd be nice to buy local so I can have someone explain the machine to me and also do repairs. OTOH I don't like encouraging businesses that have such obvious bad business practices. Harumph.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] lucifrix is joining me for dinner. Speaking of which, I need to get changed.
