Okay, so now I attempt to write about WriterCon. Bear in mind I took no notes, am not even digging up my panel schedule to refresh my memory, and I suck at remembering names. OTOH, consider how much fun random stream of counsciousness will be! :D

Writing about Cons. Or some other pun that hasn't been made yet. )
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Jesus has quit)
Dates I'm planning to be at WriterCon: July 20-24.

Dates my sister in law just emailed me as the possible times my nephew's Baptism will be taking place in Germany: June 25-July 19.

And we're... what? Surprised by this?

*headdesk*

I'm still going to WriterCon. I figure if they can't hammer down a date I'm not going to cancel my plans, even if that does mean missing out on Germany. I'll also go to Germany if it's late June/early July as I've decided that the boss has lost the right to bitch at me about when I take my vacations, esp when he knows full well I only take them for one con a year, and then for family related things like Baptisms and weddings that are slightly out of my control. But with my luck you just know this is going to be the exact same week.

Ah well.

In good news, I have finally paid for Serenity. I own my car free and clear. Now to take those pesky car payments and apply them to the rest of my debt! 8)

Tomorrow is my very first sewing class. I'm only slightly intimidated.

Today's number is still 2.

I did it

So when you wake up at 8:45 to let the cable guy in, then stumble back into bed, then wake up again past noon I think it's safe to say 1) you were tired (esp when you had about 8 hours and 45 min of sleep before letting the cable guy in) and 2) you're not going to make it to the 10am Easter services and 3) you're probably not going to get all the housework done today that you were hoping to do either.

On the other hand my cable works, and that's what really counts, right?

[avoids mentioning how her cable has now risen after 3 days of being dead]

[okay, thinks about avoiding mentioning that]

[mm... blasphemy]

[Oh, and I feel a need to point out that I did let the cable guy back out again. I didn't trap him in here until I woke up. Only until he fixed the signal]

Anyhoo, 'tis Easter and so far it seems nice and all. Will be doing dinner later with the folks. May also do the exiting activity of actually unpacking my suitcases from Connexions. Wild and crazy, I know.

Haven't done a post-Connexions report. Not sure now if I'll ever get around to it, but suffice it to say fun was had and [livejournal.com profile] lucifrix and I were able to make Philadelphia disappear, so if any of you were looking for it last Thursday and coming up with nothing that was our bad.

One of the inadvertent souvenirs of Connexions has been a renewed interest in reading Harry Potter fic. A few of my friends have been kind enough to give recommendations (wouldn't mind more, btw, hint hint) but some I've found striking out on my own and.let's just say I've learned it's better to stick with the recommended fic.

For example, I'm reading this one story which shall remain nameless and it's going along more or less sort-of kind-of fine for what's pretty clearly a kinkfic even though I've never read anything by this author before, but then we get to the "Harry's in trouble and must be saved by romantic interest" portion of the kink, and to do that the author has Harry almost get raped by, shall we say for the sake of avoiding incriminating details, a Death Eater, and Harry's there chattering away like a magpie (er, no offense to Magpie) while the DE is swanning about brandishing a knife and I'm there like "Dude! Accio knife! Accio wand! Accio Firebolt! Hell, it's NC-17 fic, Accio balls while you're at it!" but no, Harry just keeps standing there and chattering away, and I think it's really safe to say that the point at which I apparently know more spells than The Boy Who Lived But Apparently Left His Brain Somewhere Other Than Inside His Skull is the point at which something's gone awry.

But hey, who am I to fault bad story canon and characterization in the name of writing pretty? [Ahem]

And with that I scurry off. Must shower and unpack and meander over to the folks' place. I'll be sure to tell them that there were those who felt that "Win TBQ's parents for a day" was considered a shoo-in for best charity fundraising event ;) That is if they let me talk long enough before demanding that we put the Angel DVDs in now god-damnit!

Happy Bunnies! Bunnies! It must be BUNNIES! day! =)
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (confused)
Okay, I realize that I haven't totally caught up on the sleep I lost during the fun and frolic of this past weekend, and that lack of sleep is apt to make me both slow on the uptake and, more importantly, very cranky. So if I come off as having a tone on this I'm going to apologize in advance and say that honestly right now I'm just asking a question:

What's up with the cons raising money via things that are supposed to be non-profit?

Seriously. No snark attached. I'm honestly bewildered. Because I'm seeing two cons - Vividcon and Writercon - that are raising con money via the selling of vids, fanfic, and vid and fanfic related activities and isn't this exactly the kind of thing we haul individual fans over hot coals for, let alone mock them so hard that fandom_wank goes through an entire carton of cigarettes so it can enjoy the afterglow?

Now possibly I'm out of the loop here, so I invite anybody who knows more than I do about all this to please give the 411. Especially since I'm seeing these things be endorsed by those who would normally slam anyone who does for-profit fannish activities. So my first conclusion here is that I'm missing something crucial, and if so please fill me in. Because what I am seeing is fanfic being auctioned off for money (Writercon), fanfic quotes being put on mugs for money with no clear sign on whether or not they'll even bother asking the writers of the fic if they care to be quoted (Writercon again), and the creation of vids being auctioned off for money (Vividcon).

Now I get that Writercon is trying to raise scholarship funds where people who normally couldn't afford to go to the con can have their way paid for them. That's very nice. It's still profit. Why can't they have a bake sale? Or ask everyone going to throw in an extra dollar? Or anything that doesn't involve the selling of fanfic?

And Vividcon, to my understanding, is trying to keep con costs down via the vidding auction because Vividcon is a small and cheap con and everybody likes that. Okay fine. Lower the con costs otherwise. Pimp supporting memberships. Or again I'm back on bake sale.

Plus I'm given to understand the Vid auction was semi-sorta-kinda okay because it was auctioning the action of vidding, not the vids themselves. Is this not a really fine hair to split? Don't we rip Agent With Style six ways from Sunday for trying to use the excuse "I don't profit from the zines, I profit from the action of agenting the zines"? (Granted, Mysti gets ripped for other things too and I'm not trying to start that flamewar again, I'm just saying it's a handy example for why this is confusing me.)

Seriously, I just don't get it. I get that the con committees are trying to use the money for good and they're not trying to go off and buy sports cars with it or anything, but it's still making money off of something none of us are supposed to be making money off of. I mean I'm sure we'd all love to sell fanfic and vids to raise money to cure cancer too, but TPTB might get a little cranky about that considering it's their copyright to pimp for cash, not ours.

But like I say, there's tons of you on my friends list who seem to not only be fine with this but happy and eager. So - what am I missing?

Ahem

I'll try to do a witty and interesting con report later (something that, for example, is more than "So I went to this con and man it went by fast. Now what's for dinner?") but I thought I'd take this moment to say that [livejournal.com profile] bethbethbeth does not, I repeat not look like a polar bear.

I, on the other hand, do. In just the right light, mind you.

Home from Connexions. Fun was had. Tiredness now abounds so I'm going to veg out for the right of the night, but wanted to let people know I got back safe and sound.

Later! =)
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (big stick OTP)
Okay, just hanging out and waiting for [livejournal.com profile] lucifrix to call and let me know when to get her from the train station. Beyond that I've cooked all I'm going to cook and packed most of what I need to pack.

I'll be leaving tomorrow morning for Baltimore. If everything goes well and there's no traffic or anything I anticipate getting there around 3. More realistically I expect 6 ;)

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone, I'll miss those of you who won't be there, and I'll be back online Mon night or Tuesday.

See ya! =)

Whew!

Okay, cooking crisis (somewhat) averted. I'll have to do some creative cutting to try to work around the parts I messed up, but for the most part things are A-OK.

Those of you who will be joining me for snacks at Connexions? Expect mondo sugar shock ;)

Oh, and b/c [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess asked this, my cell phone number is the same as last year. Anyone who needs my cell phone number has it already. But I'll have that with me and barring bad reception in the hotel it should be working, so if you need to track me down at any point that's probably the easiest way to do it. =)

Phooey!

I was all productive tonight with regards to getting ready for Connexions and made not one but two of the possible things that I hoped to make, put the last thing out to cool, grabbed a shower, went to wrap it all up and - argh! Actually hadn't cooked all the way through!

Grrrr. Will try to salvage. But still! I was all proud of myself for getting everything done and being able to go to bed on time and everything.

Phooey, I say unto you, phooey.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (anti-drug)
You know, when you've posted the final part of an experimental story it is downright cruel for my spam filter to pick that day to decide that anything from @livejournal.com isn't to be trusted. I woke up this morning to nothing in my inbox and panicked thinking that I'd screwed up part 4 of Habit so much that nobody could even find a way to gently break it to me that I needed to go back to the drawing board.

Then I actually checked LJ. Ahem. Stupid spam filters.

In an effort to prove that I have lost what remains of my tiny little mind, I have decided that not only am I going to try to make some food to take down to Connexions, but that I'm going to try to make two of everything so I can give something to the con suite, and have something left for my friends to munch on as we watch DVDs and such.

Er - that's assuming the con suite doesn't mind other people bringing in food. Pardon me as I dash off an email to ask about that.

Anyway, whether or not I'm making two of everything, I'll have a few nights of baking ahead of me so if you don't see me hanging out in IRC that's why.

Finally, today is Shipper War Rematch over at Angel's Food Drive. I missed the last shipper war, b/c I didn't see a reminder about it until too late in the day. Last time Spike/Angel won, which is nice and all, but damn it Wes/Angel fans gotta represent! C'mon, people! It may be the only way we get to donate money in the honor of Angel bending Wes over his desk. Surely that's worth a buck or ten. ;)

[hauls out credit card, goes to make another donation]
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (rswes)
Being possessed of both time and energy I have devoted today to, believe it or not, Spring Cleaning.

I have no idea how far I'll get with this, as I suspect many of my plans for today are going to involve more time than I have to work with, but on the other hand so far I've taken some stuff down to storage, gotten rid of 4 garbage bags worth of crud and even managed to dig out a few corners of the house that were being lost to me simply tossing stuff into them to deal with later.

I'm not done yet in terms of my goals for the day, and already I'm hungry and going to do a break for lunch, but still, even if I don't do all of it I'm pleased to have made some progress.

And can I just say it's amazing how many random pieces of paper you keep on your desk when you put them down and forget what was on them? Far too many things were taking up space that I couldn't even remember why I was holding them. Bad me. Bad, bad me.

Once this is all done I shall be treating myself to the "so Kosher it's good enough for Passover" meal of pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon. This past week has found me eating far too many things which essentially amount to just being bread, so by last night my body was demanding that I either explore other avenues of the food pyramid or it was going to leave me and try to find a more suitable host for it. Last night was a HUGE salad, which helped with the craving for fresh veggies, and tonight will be the pork because it's either that or mainline a steak directly into my veins. And I'm not saying I'm ruling that second possibility out for later.

Will try to get some writing done tonight if I can, and if the cats don't drive me completely insane in the meanwhile (all the windows in the house are open so they're running back and forth like maniacs). And in the meanwhile I keep pondering if I have the ability to make things for the con suite for Connexions or if my feeling that I should do so is just another form of my packing anxiety. We shall see.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (going down)
[livejournal.com profile] astarte99 asked me the following question regarding Connexions:

What makes it so cool? I am thinking about attending a fandom con or two for the first time this year (been to lots of other cons, just not fandom ones), and am trying to figure out which ones I should put at the top of the list.

To which I provide the following answers:

Why should you or any other slash fan go to Connexions this year? )

There's more but now I'm running late for dinner. I now throw the microphone out to you, the viewers at home, to add your own reasons if you are so inclined =)
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (going down)
So the holidays are over, I'm not going to bother attempting to clean up the remains of Christmas until next weekend, and I finally get a chance to log back on and catch up. I now present onto you various tidbits of things I feel like commenting on:

So, (Destiny Spoiler alert!) according to this article Sarah Thompson didn't know that the selfsame spoiler, natch ) Huh. Bitchy commentary as relates to this spoiler )

Anyway...

***

As 2004 starts I've got various resolutions that I've made, most of which I'm not sharing with you people because I like being dark and mysterious, or at least borderline obnoxious, but one is of course to try to top all the activity that I did last year. This is going to be difficult considering that last year I added a new member to my kitty family, made a comment about Wes and beastiality that for some odd reason my memory completely blanked on, started a war, created a blackout, completely by accident influenced the fall fashion line, made absolutely certain that my FBI file has a gold star and a red flag on it, for that matter made certain that I was going to Hell, abused font tags with a message I'm sure I'll be repeating very frequently as 2004 goes on, and, of course, bought a new red chair.

So clearly 2004 has a lot to live up to, especially as far as office related furniture purchases goes. But I think I've done pretty good by almost 100% convincing [livejournal.com profile] lucifrix to go to Connexions this year and that's got to be a good start, right? Now I'm going to convince all of you to go to Connexions this year for verily the con doth rocketh like no other con doth.

I swear I won't speak fake Olde Timey talk at the con if you go. Much. Possibly. Look as anyone who's seen me at Connexions can tell you, I can't promise much in terms of good or what they like to call "sane" behavior. But the con is cool. Go to the con. Be the con. Live the con.

***

Now that the holiday rush is over my mind naturally turns back to thoughts of fic. Epiphany is still on the back burner as I hash out the timeline of the upcoming plot, Pet has by no means been forgotten (nor has C&M), and Trust Me has at least four more parts to it before the story's done. Or, since I'm sure you all know my complete inability to guess how long stories will be, I guess I should actually say there are four more significant plot points that need to happen before the story is done.

So naturally my mind now tells me that concievably TM is turning into a new series.

Head? Meet desk.

I mean not that I mind as such. I'm just amused to watch bunnies blow up. Lord knows if I was going to pick a story concept that would appeal to me as an ongoing series, this isn't the one I would guess would do it. But - say it with me now - "Everybody Fell was supposed to be a one-off" so what the Hell do I know?

Not that I'm promising anything. I think one of the worst things a writer can do is not realize when they should have said "the end". There have definitely been stories I've done in the past where I turned them into series, or added sequels that at the time seemed like a great idea but now that I can reread them just make me wince. So we'll see. I am nothing if not a bunny victim.

***

Speaking of things which sound like they should be made into LJ icons or sig quotes, [livejournal.com profile] lucifrix answered the question of "Is it absolutely necessary for lesbians to use toys when having sex together?" with the comment "If toys were necessary no dyke would leave the house without a big purse" and damn if that isn't wisdom for the ages.

***

For a brief moment today I pondered learning how to do Astrology, just for the fun of it. Then I skimmed a book about it and ran away scared from all the calculations. And this was a book that actually encouraged using a computer to help.

***

Did you know that [livejournal.com profile] sisabet is actually younger than I am? Durn whippersnapper.

***

I promise not to talk fakey Old Western at Connexions either. Mostly. If I remember.

***

Finally, for now at least, I've got another thought I've been pondering but I'm going to toss it in a post all its own for the sake of discussion purposes. So apologies for the posts one right after another. After that I've treated myself to multiple books and magazines, so I'm going to hunker down and enjoy myself. Mmmm.... geekiness.

PS - Don't forget to register for the banquet at Connexions too. 8)

[livejournal.com profile] cin1607 got here safe and sound.

VividCon DVD was worth every penny.

I've realized that with no Buffycon to go to next year it's possible I might be able to make it to Vividcon. Just have to see how my post-London budget shakes out.

I realize this also means that I should probably make a vid or two of my own before that happens ;)

As of last night have started getting [livejournal.com profile] cin1607 caught up on Angel s4. During Deep Down:

Cin: [watches Wes gently take care of Angel after pulling him out of the water] God! This could not get slashier!
TBQ: Oh yes it can.
Cin: What? Wesley crawls into bed with him?
TBQ: Just wait.
Cin: [watches Wes feed Angel his blood] GOD!!
TBQ: Pretty much.

Not sure of my online schedule at the moment so [smooch] until next time!
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (BFF)
So I'm back. Or I was back yesterday but was too tired/hungry/busy spending Father's day with my dad to post anything.

Not much of a con report here as random thoughts:

All reports about me in a jacuzzi with a gay man are true. Pictures will follow.

Robin Sachs is as nice as everyone is saying he was. He also has a nice-feeling hip. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to determine how I found this out.

[livejournal.com profile] wesleysgirl must either secretly be elf kind or attuned to them because she thought to bring elf vodka and this was a very, very, very good thing.

[livejournal.com profile] wolfling, though not elf kind, did bring along snacks and chocolate and that was also a very good thing.

Being in a hotel with many of your friends is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because you get to hang out with them, a curse because it's impossible to hang out with all of them as much as you'd like to. I finally had to scrap many plans for the weekend in favor of the "You! Sit still for a minute and let's talk and have fun while I actually know where you are!" method. This also inadvertently had the side effect of creating the "Where the @#$% is TBQ? She said she was going to be here an hour ago." problem. So to all those who wondered why I was invisible, that would be why. Sorry!

[livejournal.com profile] justhuman, when presented with a DevonCon T-shirt, immediately put it on and I think right there is all you need to know about how totally beepin' she is. =)

[livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory is too cute for words. And, in case her parents are looking, I can vouch for the fact that she spent the entire weekend at Bible study. No, really! Ask her about flax!

[livejournal.com profile] byrne is a big dork, but very cute and did a wonderful job of playing Marti, even though she didn't go ahead with [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess's suggestion to truly embrace the role by killing herself at the end. ;)

[livejournal.com profile] bonibaru managed to track me down and everything she said about me is true, though I think it was very kind of her to leave out the part where I kept quacking at her and clinging to her garments.

My biggest lesson from the weekend is that I do not spend nearly enough time hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] lucifrix (aka "Satan's Weasel") and [livejournal.com profile] captainnancy. I am going to have to rectify that in the future.

And, for those of you who have read Te's account of the weekend, yes that's all true as well. Basically I found out through the grapevine that Robin Sachs had been denied A) hot lesbian action and B) with Te and I felt this was a crime against God and man. So, upon finding Te in the lobby later that evening, I pounced upon her and declared for all to hear that it was my opinion that this was a great injustice and that, for the record, I would never deny Robin Sachs A) hot lesbian action nor B) with Te.

In what proved to be a remarkable time-saver, Robin Sachs was right there. So Te, after trying politely to catch his attention and then finally giving up and setting off some signal flares, managed to get him to look our way as we smooched.

Robin seemed very appreciative and even offered suggestions, although apparently he'd been struck mute by the whole thing and had to resort to hand signals to try to indicate what he wanted. As far as I can figure he was gesturing for me and Te to either fold sheets or possibly make him a small ham sandwich, or perhaps he only meant to indicate that there was a flag on the field and we'd have to take a five yard penalty. Whatever it was both he and Te seemed happy about it, so I'm glad to have played my part.

Finally (for now at least), [livejournal.com profile] buffybot and I would like to declare our intent to marry at the Holiday Inn, Saddlebrook next month, which I think means she and I have to flip or possibly Indian wrestle to find out who gets to have [livejournal.com profile] miss_edith for a maid of honor.

More later, when I'm either more coherent or in possession of pictures. Now I'm off to work.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (angelbot)
Have realized that the reason why I'm not currently suffering packing anxiety is because I have so filled my "To Do" list with so much crap that I actually have to do that there's no room for even my strange psyche to try to pencil in a retiling of the bathroom. So, uh, yay?

To all thems that I promised dubbed tapes - you'll be getting them. I'll be babysitting my VCR something fierce between now and when I leave tomorrow, but you'll be getting them ;)

During some downtime last night I worked on what exists thus far of the next Epiphany story, which I mention here since I've noticed the natives are getting restless. It's coming. And it will rock, if I do say so myself. Although [livejournal.com profile] buffybot is again lending a hand so I can only claim partial credit for the rocking.

Had dinner with the folks last night. Have discovered that my mission, should I choose to accept it, is to figure out what 2 episodes of Buffy and 2 episodes of Angel to show my mom to addict her to both shows. I've got an interesting challenge here b/c she's interested in Buffy, having read of it (and actually asked me, unprompted, to bring my DVDs over), but not so much with Angel, which of course everyone here realizes is not allowed to be because if you share my DNA you must share my obsessions.

I was able to cajole her with a promise of the Samwise-directed ep, however, and get the promise from her that she'd watch at least one Angel ep besides that. So now I have to figure out what ep of what I have to show her. It's not easy, since s4 is obviously the best but much of what makes it so good is knowing the characters and their backgrounds. Thus a more introductory episode suggests itself but I don't want it so early in the series that you can still see the tape and gum they used to keep everything together. It's bad enough that Mom's insisting on seeing Welcome to the Hellmouth ;)

So for the 2 Buffy eps I'm thinking Welcome to the Hellmouth, on Mom's insistance, and Hush, after which I think there's nothing else I could do within 2 eps to addict her. For Angel it's Soulless and... not sure yet. I thought about Deep Down, since it was fairly expository, but I rewatched it last night and I'm not sure if it isn't too tied in with s3 stuff to be good for a first-time viewer. So... what then? Ground State? Long Day's Journey? Apocalypse Nowish? Possibly even kicking it s2 style with Judgement? Decisions decisions.

Don't suppose anybody's got any recommendations? I might be too close to the show to know what'd be a good ep for a newbie. Anybody out there become a fan in later seasons got an ep to suggest?

In other news I'll probably be too busy tonight to hang out on IRC and chat, so if anyone needs me all urgent-like they can holler at me on my cell.

And yes, Wolf, I haven't forgotten that I need to finish working on that one @#$%ing scene. ;)
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (smut)
Okay, in no way am I coherent enough to really do justice to a con report but as I'm going to be busy for the next couple of days and this is my only chance, here I am going for the gusto.

4 days. 4 hours of sleep. Still the prettiest. )

Ack! Can't stand it! Too excited!

[livejournal.com profile] wolfling gets in today, so I've got a couple of hours to do last-minute errands and then pick her up at the airport. Tomorrow we road trip down to [livejournal.com profile] connexions. EEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

On the odd chance that this turns out to be my last entry before the con, lemme just say bye for now and I look forward to touching base with y'all, if not actually reading the five billion entries on my friends list, when I get back ;)

Oh - and because a couple of people weren't sure last year - I answer to "TBQ", "The Brat Queen" or, as one girl found out at the banquet, "Yo, Brat!"

Looking forward to seeing y'all!
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (smut)
So many of you are going on about me being naked at the Connexions banquet that if this dress thing doesn't work out to my satisfaction I'm going to go wearing a see-through shirt.

THAT'LL show ya.

Wait...
