Attention! On June 5 I will once again be participating in a charity walk to benefit a local cancer center. For a snapshot image of said center I shall shamelessly steal from the first post I did when I did this:

[T]he Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center is a place for healing, where they like to say that science and soul come together. Their patients are provided with a superior level of clinical care and access to world-class physicians, skilled nurses and the latest in treatment options, research protocols and supportive services. A full-range of cancer services is available in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, with the oncology team working together to provide the best possible outcome for their patients.

The June 5 Walk, Run, & Ride is their biggest fundraising event. All money goes directly to the cancer center and is 100% tax-deductible.

Why do I mention this? So you can SPONSOR ME!!! You can donate online via that oh so handy and easy to use link and pay by credit card. If you would rather mail your donation in feel free to let me know and I can email you the relevant information.

I know the economy sucks, but every little bit helps. Even weetiny donations are welcome. The Bennett Cancer Center is where my Uncle Tommy got some of his treatment. It also does research so it's not like a donation here only benefits the center.

So please please please please sponsor me. Also please feel free to pimp this link and plea for help in your personal LJs or blogs or what have you, if you are so inclined.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I haven't said much about the oil spill because the very idea of it makes me want to kill someone, possibly myself. However, much though breathing into a paper bag for the rest of my life sounds comforting, it's not actually useful.

Donations to charities that can do stuff, however, is.

So allow me to signal boost this LJ comm:

They're having auctions for various Gulf-supporting charities in the same way the help_haiti comm did after the earthquake. Auction #1 has already finished, but #2 is starting tomorrow (June 21) so there's still plenty of opportunity to join in.

Today was my walk for Hope in Motion. HUGE crowd this year. HUGE. I'm going to be interested in seeing the final stats, to see how things compared to last year.

It was hot and humid but thankfully the sun didn't come out until the very end.

All told my team raised $1,010 this year, which meant we surpassed our team goal by $10. Many many thanks to those of you who donated to support me this year! Couldn't have done it without you!

First things first: 7 days left to sponsor me in my walk for the Bennet Cancer Center. Please? Pretty please? I'll look at you ever so cutely and adorably.

Second, I have land! Well sorta. The co-op I live in started a community garden, so I have a plot of my very own. I'm trying to limit myself to plants I've grown before with some success (tomatoes, herbs) while adding in some new ones just to see how it goes (cucumbers, onions). I figure this year will mostly be a learning experience and any food I get at the end of it will be a bonus.

So far I've put in good dirt, some wire fences to make it look pretty (and make sure I don't accidentally go into my neighbors' plots), and the seedlings. I still need to get cages or trellises or summat to help the tomatoes and cucumbers grow big and tall. (This is when folks who have more gardening experience and wisdom than I are encouraged to chip in on the topic of the best things to use for tomatoes and cucumbers being grown in a raised bed.)

That's the latest for now. I'm still catching up on everything from the week that I was away. In the meanwhile I relax here in my wonderful A/C and remind you that again there are only 7 days left to sponsor me.

*looks cute and adorable*

Coming into this late thanks to work, but once again I am walking to support the Bennett Cancer Center. As I am lazy efficient, I shall simply cut and paste from previous entries on the subject:

[T]he Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center is a place for healing, where they like to say that science and soul come together. The June 6 Walk, Run, & Ride is their biggest fundraising event. All money goes directly to the cancer center and is 100% tax-deductible.

You know, one of the things fandom does well - in addition to porn - is organizing whip-rounds when they're needed. [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti has started up to provide a way for folks to donate time/talent/items for auction, proceeds to go to various charities that are helping Haiti out.

I don't know if there's a specific charity for "Donations in Pat Robertson's name to gay atheist Haitians currently getting abortions" but if there is, I'm sure there's a way to arrange an auction for it.

There's also [livejournal.com profile] fandom_charity if you are so inclined.

Of course this is in addition to the usual Red Cross/Doctors Without Borders/etc links that I'm sure you've seen already.

I'm so close! Mere inches from goal! The event is this Sunday, so you still have time to sponsor my walk for the Bennett Cancer Center.

(With thanks to all those who have donated already)

If you haven't yet, there's still time to sponsor me in my walk for the Bennett Cancer Center. Doing so helps support a worthy charity and makes for happy TBQs *nodnod*.

Been a while since I've done one of these. Not sure why I think the day I'm fighting off a migraine is a good day to do some catch up, but here we are!

So today I did work with Habitat for Humanity. I've wanted to do stuff with them for YEARS and one of the nice things about Primatech is that Habitat is one of their sponsored charities. So you can go work at Habitat for a day and it doesn't come out of your vacation days. Obviously there are limits. One couldn't, say, work at Habitat ALL the time and still get paid. But for helping out now and again it's nice that the company allows you to make time for it.

It was, as you might imagine, cold. But I'd dressed in layers and had on a scarf and such so it wasn't too bad. I also put my coat back on when we got to more still labor, like hammering.

We started the day with post hole digging. This was my first moment of "Are you sure you're going to be okay with that, young lady?" which I found very funny because the options were digging or going up on the rickety roof. Yeah, give me digging anyday. Plus I don't mind digging. I probably would've volunteered for it anyway. Whenever it snows I tend to clean out around my car and then clean out around the cars of elderly neighbors if I haven't yet killed myself from exhaustion. And of course there was the tunnel to the center of the earth I dug for my lilac bush, which gave me much practice in the subset of digging known as "SHIT this state has a lot of rocks in it."

That latter skill came in very handy when the hole I and my (male) partner were working on turned out to have what I surmise was the original foundation or walkway for the house buried under our shovels. My guess is that in days gone by these slabs were repurposed ballast from the ships that used the local port. Either way it required some doing and I was happy to dig in - heh - and do my part.

Later on was putting insulation on windows and this is when I think we had more people than we had tasks to do. (I also think my team blitzed through the planned tasks for the day much faster than the coordinators anticipated. Like I think they thought the digging would last all day and we finished with an hour to spare before lunch) Anyway, this was another moment of amusing sexism for me because I was doing some hammering and just as I started one of my teammates - a guy in my department at work - looked at me and asked "Are you... okay with that?" And I just replied "Pointy end of the nail goes towards me... right?" in my dry, CJ Cregg manner. Though in my head I was kinda like... dude. Hammer. Nails. I realize there's a stereotype about women and tools but 1) I'm pretty sure chimps have brains enough to get hammer/nails down and 2) You just saw me do the post hole digging task so it's not like you should be under the impression that I'm too girly to get my hands dirty.

Though admittedly I did not fight to usurp this guy's place with some of the later tasks because he was one of the guys who vanished for at least an hour in the morning in the name of getting coffee, and that was a solid hour of digging work by those of us left behind. So if he finally felt like doing some work - mazel tov. I was just amused at how apparently having hammer, nails, and a uterus flashed error messages in his brain.

We finished up a half hour early. I grabbed Panera on my way home and tried to warm up again which I may manage sometime... today, I'm hoping. (Being warm, I'm already home. That was thankfully managed quickly.) And I can tell that my back and knees are going to be loving me tomorrow for all of today's hard work so I'm going to be a good girl and not run the errands I was thinking of running and instead stay home and relax and cook and be good friends with Advil and Icy Hot.

So that was my day.

As I sit here trapped in cat bondage (seriously, Mac is lying across my wrists like a pair of extremely dense yet furry handcuffs) and waiting for the debate to begin, I have time for some links.

As always, tags indicate topics )

Finally, outside of the cut so more can see it: [livejournal.com profile] stoney321 is doing a 3-Day walk for breast cancer. she explains why far, FAR better than I ever could. All I can say is that her doing these 3-Days is just one of the many reasons why I think she is utterly awesome, and if you have a couple of bucks to spare (hard in this economy, I know) please follow the link and donate. As she says, even if it's a dollar, it's a dollar more than she had before.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Default)
It is, omg, so freaking hot outside. I bring you links, not coherence. Not that I'm ever coherent )
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Radio TBQ)
Oh so many things to headdesk about today, in various degrees of reasons why and magnitude. No, seriously, consider yourself warned )
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (reading)
Okay, so another round of me sharing the links that I find during the day and any comments I may have on them.

The tags should indicate the topics )

I did a thing! I did a walking thing! Perhaps you've heard me speak about it? ;)

It went well. The temps weren't insanely hot but it was humid, so I was very glad for the water I brought and the water they supplied along the way. At the end there was also a tent where you could get more free bottled water as well as snacks, like apples and bagels and cookies and Veggie Booty. Afterwards I hung out with my group for a little bit and enjoyed the band that was playing, then left for home where I had a proper lunch, a cold shower, and then a nap. In that order.

But if you want to see how it all went, check out my Hope in Motion gallery, where I have thoughtfully uploaded pictures and some captions to help out when those thousand words don't quite make it.

And thanks to everyone's donations I was able to raise $1,765 for the Bennett Cancer Center. Y'all ROCK! Thank you so much!

Now to kick back and relax. =)

WHOOOOSH!

My day went very quickly. Helped, I think, in no small part to how I got out of bed at ONE PM WTFBODYWTF??

Still, with my eye on the prize of my walk tomorrow I made it a point to chill out as much as I could. There was catching up on Tivo, reading of magazines, eating of food when I remembered that was a good way to keep myself alive. The usual. Also much snuggling with kitties, which is never a bad thing.

My walk is tomorrow morning. I've got all my things set up. Digital camera shall be coming with me, so hopefully I can get some good pictures for y'all. I also pulled out one of my old tour guide hats (excellent for keeping the sun off of your head) so I'm going to be pretty easy to spot, I'm sure.

Beyond that I shall be heading off to grab a shower and some sleep. I'll update y'all after the fact.

And if you'd still like to SPONSOR ME you can! SAVE THE BENNETT CANCER CENTER SAVE THE WORLD!!! THIS IS THE LAST TIME I'M ABLE TO MAKE THAT JOKE AND I'M GOING TO DO IT, DAMN IT!

Night!
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Rita comfort)
I'll have posts and updates later but for now ONLY ONE DAY LEFT TO SPONSOR ME!!!! My walk for the Bennett Cancer Center is tomorrow morning! In fact there's actually less than 24 hours before the walk begins.

IF YOU WANT TO SPONSOR ME NOW IS THE TIME!!!!

There. That should be a good enough reminder for those who asked for one. =)
