So, let's talk about McCain's choice of Tina Fey Gov. Sarah Palin for his VP candidate.

Get comfy, this might take a while. )
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (confused)
I'm having an Arrested Development kind of reaction to Obama's VP pick. Specifically "...him?"

Vacation, day one. Already I have done knitting and cuddling with kitties. There's been other stuff too but c'mon. Priorities.

Some links for you all! Including one I think is a must-see for everyone who is... what's the word I'm looking for? Oh yeah, alive. You can view Killing Us Softly 3, Advertising's Image of Women online thanks to googlevideo. It's a few years old but very sad how much has yet to change. (See also: Wrangler uses dead women to sell jeans. Which is from THIS WEEK WTF.) As Jean says, advertising sells more than products. Of note is how she also discusses racism. There's plenty of examples for that intersectionality that IBARW was talking about.

More links behind the cut... for after you've watched the above movie, of course )

Ah, weekends with family. Ah, spending Monday morning digging through storage rooms and subsequently hurting my back. Ah... no that about covered it. Now we move on to catching up on links: Typing doesn't hurt my back, thankfully )

And that's the news for now. In other news I have finally gotten on Facebook. However it's actual-identity-me and not TBQ-me. This being due to both my brother being the one to encourage me to get a Facebook account, and [livejournal.com profile] astolat's advice that the best defense is a good offense as far as handling the issue of keeping real life and fannish life separate.

So that being said, I sent friends requests out yesterday to people who I know, but who may not know me under my real name. Obviously I'm not going to say my real name here (and I ask that the fannish name be kept away from there), but if you know me, are on Facebook, and got a friend request from someone with a T initial in their name, that might've been me. Hi!

Looooooooong day of visiting my Grams in rehab (fractured rib kind, not Lindsey Lohan kind) and dealing with related family drama. Also if anyone knows how to get AVG free version 8.0.136 to stop bugging me to restart my computer even after I've just restarted the damn thing That would be fabulous.

Now then, on to the news. As always, tags are your friends )

Again with the disguistingly nice day outside. Though it was a wee bit warm. Still, I was able to walk to the store and to pick up dinner. This is when I learned that shows like What Not to Wear are so right when they talk about you never know who you're going to run into when you're out. I nearly bumped into someone from work. I was dressed okay enough for a weekend, but hadn't had a chance to shower after housecleaning and working with my plants and the aforementioned walk. Luckily I don't think I was spotted. Whew.

Now then, on to tonight's addition of Radio TBQ. As always, tags indicate subjects )
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (NOLA)
Had a great night tonight. Did a new thing which I may go into more detail on once it's a not-so-new thing and thus out of the shakey larval stage. But it was a positive experience so yay for that.

Ow ow ow - currently being kneaded on by a kitty who needs her claws trimmed. In related news, Luna says hi.

Now on to the links of the day. Not too many tonight, but it'll go behind a cut tag all the same. Cut tags make things neater! )

And that is actually that. Woohoo!
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (reading)
Okay, so another round of me sharing the links that I find during the day and any comments I may have on them.

The tags should indicate the topics )

First, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] amireal: Why, if you think harassment is flattering, you are stupid. Select quote:
Men who want to be with beautiful women devote their energy to winning dates with beautiful women. Men who devote their energy to aggression toward strange women enjoy winning fights with women. That’s why they’ve set up a context where she feels cornered and pressured and where their male buddies back them up.

In political news, thanks to Barack Obama the Democratic Party will no longer accept donations from lobbyists. Also, if you'd like to support Barack's campaign and haven't before, they're currently doing a donation match:
"If you make a $25 donation today, your gift will be matched by a previous donor who has agreed to give again. You can even choose to exchange a note with them about why you support Barack."
You can go here to take advantage of the match.

Of note: when I first heard about this at 4:30pm they were 2,000 folks shy of their goal of 10,000 new donors. I went to take a nap and now, 3 hours later, they have 11,286 (with a new goal of 20,000). That's just awesome.

Nabbed from [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess who nabbed from others and so the circle of LJ life continues:

As you presumably know, California's recent court decision regarding same-sex marriage was a huge deal. It was historic, long overdue, and took a hell of a lot of fighting.

Unfortunately (and not surprisingly) Governor Schwarzenegger is receiving tons of phone calls from the supporters of 'Limits on Marriage' (the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in California) about his comment to a group of Log Cabin Republicans that he wouldn't support a constitutional amendment which discriminates against gays by defining marriage as only being between a man and woman.

We don't want him to go back on his word. So he needs to hear from us, too.

Calling to voice your support for California's gay marriage ruling means calling an automated system; you won't have to talk to anyone. And you can call even if you're not from California. So please, the more the better.

The number is 1-916-445-2841; press 1 (For English unless you prefer another language), 5 (Hot Issues), 1 to get to the particular issue, then press 1 again if you want to support upholding the court decision and are against a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Having just done it myself I can confirm that it's all automated. Also use the numbers given above because at one point an option is for "Current legislation" which could throw you. That's when you hit 5 for Hot Issues and then 1 for this particular issue.

And I was able to do it all in, according to my cellphone, one minute five seconds. Because I'm made of more awesome than [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess is. 8)

Memo to the world: Just because you can do something in PowerPoint doesn't mean you should. Also? When I ask you for original graphics your reply should never be "Sure, it's an Excel file." (Note: these were not graphs or charts or even anything that had numbers on it. It was PICTURES.)

"I don't know why the file's too big for email!" Really? I don't think I could even begin to explain it to you.

Speaking of things that I can't even begin to explain, and yet here they are: Clinton touts support from 'White Americans.'

From the original
article:

"I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

"There's a pattern emerging here," she said. [...]

Clinton rejected any idea that her emphasis on white voters could be interpreted as racially divisive. "These are the people you have to win if you're a Democrat in sufficient numbers to actually win the election. Everybody knows that."

*facepalm*

I'm gonna be here with my cats and M&Ms and new SPN and Step it Up and Dance tonight.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Obama)
Thanks to Hillary Clinton's 3 a.m. ad, CNN is currently doing a poll of "Who would you prefer to have answer a White House crisis phone call at 3 a.m.?" Your options are McCain, Huckabee, Clinton, and Obama.

Am I insane for wanting a fifth option of "Somebody other than the President of the United States who is responsible for picking up the phone at 3 a.m. so that the leader of the free world can get some sleep and not run the risk of having to deal with telemarketers?"

Perhaps I take things too literally.
thebratqueen: Captain Marvel (Obama)
Oh for fuck's sake Ralph.

You know I say that and then vaguely feel bad because part of the problem with politics in this country is not enough choices, so certainly viable third-party candidates are something that I can get behind. It's just that at this stage of the game Ralph, to me, comes across not so much as "Welcome voice of someone who hasn't bought into the obviously broken status quo" so much as "Political version of that person who sneers at everything that everyone does, up to and including the method by which we exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide, for the sheer reason that everyone does it and therefore by not doing it they are Hipper Than Thou, kinda like Christian on Project Runway only without the awesome wrestling diva persona. Unless Ralph has something he's not telling us."

Which is totally unfair as I don't think Ralph actually does hold himself up as being Hipper Than Thou, just that he comes off that way. For instance the way that he's announcing that he's running now, in the middle of shit-tons of news about Barak vs. Hillary, and how with the two of them we're finally seeing hints of a primary process that vaguely resembles the sort of thing it's supposed to be, and people are getting excited about politics and interested, and we get this announcement like a needle-scratch across the record. Like it comes off as not so much an announcement as an attempt to jump into the middle of things and try to claim credit for the excitement or at least a claim like, for this presidential race, he had anything to do with it.

And I realize that he's run before but, yanno, so has McCain. Not that John got his party's nomination like Nadar did but grabbing that nominatoin is just a leeetle harder in John's party. And John Edwards had the VP nomination last time and still had to start at the beginning and debate five billion times just like everyone else. So to me Ralph's announcement doesn't come off as "Yay, third party!" in terms of all the benefits for us as it is the benefits for him. Ergo the eye roll. Though it's possibly a knee-jerk Ralph eyeroll in and of itself. Like if Ross Perot decided to run again my knee-jerk reaction would be "Cool!" Not so much because I was a fan of Ross, but because my automatic association with him is of a third party candidate who made things interesting. Or if it was some random third-party person I'd never heard of before I'd say "Cool!" since, hey, random third-party person I've never heard of before. Who knows what they're bringing to the table? Could be interesting.

Anyway, those are my rambling thoughts. In other news, while I am not Hillary's biggest fan, I will admit to a tip of the hat for how her campaign is figuring out how to keep her name out there in spite of the fact that her campaign budget at this point is down to, I believe, a can of spam and a nickel. Mind you the whole OMG BARAK IS A LYING LIAR WHO LIES thing doesn't come off as "Astute political attack" so much as "Annoying whine to the teacher about how somebody forgot to shaaaaaare" but still: got her in the news. Made use of a good hot-button soundbite by trying to equate Barack with Karl Rove. Got her to bring up the debate concept again since those are yet another of the few ways she can get publicity in the race. Heck, I'm even amused at how she used his campaign materials as a way to make up for her lacking ones.

So my hat is geniunely off to whoever in her campaign came up with that. It's way better than, for instance, when John Kerry replied to the Swift Boat thing with... nothing, really. Which still boggles my mind. Sheesh.

Now to go dig my car out of the snow.

As I have an opinion on who y'all should vote for, I thought I'd put up the link to my previous post on why folks should vote for Obama. Because you should. I'll get very pouty and cry otherwise. Nobody wants that. I'll start causing blackouts again.

Yes we can!

Because [livejournal.com profile] tygerseye asked and the answer turned out to matter, here's why I voted for Obama instead of Clinton:

LA Times supports Obama

Chicago Sun-Times endorses Obama

Seattle Stranger endorses Obama
