Random fannish stuff
Oct. 29th, 2003 11:57 amI've noticed various people on my friends list posting about 24. Yay! Come, sit by me and enjoy the wonderfullness. Keifer is sexy, and he's banging the President. 8)
I happened to watch an episode of Gilmore Girls last night. Now granted, I only caught an ep or two back in s1 and then didn't pay much attention until last night's ep, but still I gotta ask: when did Lorelei and Rory become such self-centered whiny babies? Because I watched that whole ep and wondered why I was supposed to feel sympathetic for their problems. Granted Lorelei seemed to point this out to Rory at the end, but even still I was so not there on the tree thing since dude, you're in Connecticut. It's fall. That tree will be useful to you for about a month and a half and then you're back indoors again. I get that maybe Rory has, since s1, apparently developed into a neurotic person but wouldn't her neurosis have clued her in to an outdoor location being a bad place to study? Stake out your indoor spot now if you're staking out anything.
And the less said about Lorelei's self-imposed drama with the mother the better.
Then we move on to Angel stuff and I'm going to try to avoid spoilers here but again I'm back on: breathe. No season has done anything with eps 2-5 besides dick around a bit and move people into place. Then we get killer episodes for November sweeps, a quality crapshoot of eps for Dec-Jan, assuming we get any eps at all, and then it's back to sweeps again. BREATHE. And remember that casting sides only show who happened to have scenes with someone outside the main cast. It's not an indication of who's getting the most screentime.
Look, I get the fear of Spike thing. I agree that he co-opted the storylines over on Buffy. And if they do that with Spike on Angel believe you me I'll be bitching right along with you. But right now we've got an environment where people can't post spoilers like unto "And then there's a scene of Spike standing next to a sandwich" without people freaking out about "God damn it it's another scene with Spike and food! What about Wes's food needs? He should be eating too for Christ's sake!! Spike's stealing everybody's plotlines and he's totally ruining the show!!" Again I say: BREATHE.
And before I get a whole new little flamewar going in my journal from people who either forget what I've said in the past or who come onto my posts from links posted elsewhere, I'm not anti-spoiler, I'm not anti-bitching. I'm anti-melodrama over things that are, right now, pure speculation. Which, for that matter, doesn't mean you can't have it, it just means it makes me really really tired to read it. You can feel free to post in your LJs about how Spike is ruining the show and all it stands for and I'm going to feel free to post in mine about how this is driving me batshit.
I mean, granted, s6 and s7 Buffy were definitely light years away from the show we started watching where things like Giles not touching stuff would have been an actual plot point and not some random lame-ass joke. And after the crapfest of s3 Angel I certainly won't be one to say that this isn't a show that flushes good storylines down the toilet in the name of Joss's Dorian Grey brainfarts. But s4 showed that Angel could also kick ass and treat us like adults and I'm not ready to throw in the towel on it yet, especially not in the face of current evidence.
Take the heart attacks people are having over the end of Home. I'm seeing people everywhere freaking out about this which amazes me since apparently I missed the episode where it explained in detail what, exactly, Angel got in order to give Connor that normal life. Oh wait - I didn't, because that ep hasn't aired yet. We know Connor's got a normal life. We know Angel's the only one who remembers him. Period, full stop, end of discussion. We don't know for certain it was a mindwipe. We don't know for certain that it was a shift in reality. And we definitely don't know for certain how much of the show's previous plotlines have been rewritten to account for Connor not being there. Beyond that all we've got is speculation, and I personally find this funny considering I would definitely take the Vegas odds on Mutant Enemy not having figured this out yet either. They are the masters of filling in the details of stuff like that as they go along based on what works for the story. So fans thinking that they know absolutely everything that's been "mind-raped" out of, say, Wes have some pretty mad future telling skillz if you ask me.
I find myself having a "racism is stupid" moment here. As the comedian whose name I forget said, it's dumb to hate people because of race because Lord knows we've got enough reasons to hate people on an individual level. It's dumb to bitch about the ways ME has screwed up Angel based on speculation because I'm sure that if they do screw up we're going to get plenty of reasons in the actual show itself. We don't need to use our imaginations to invent more options.
That being said, I'm modifying my safe word list. There are certain discussions that are driving me up a wall and while I respect and support people's rights to have said discussions in their own journals I don't want 'em in mine. Granted this list is subject to change at any time, but here it is now:
1) Spike is stealing Wes's screen time (an oldie but still a goodie)
2) Anyone bitching at me for daring to suggest that perhaps the sun does not shine out of Spike's ass
3) The "mindwipe" and how it ruined the show/totally destroyed Wesley's character/erased everything that's happened on Angel including but not limited to the very first scene of Angel pretending to be drunk in a bar back in 1.1
4) Other points of self-induced panic to be determined later.
Keep this stuff away from me and we'll have a happier TBQ. I may not be able to lower your stress levels, but Lord knows I can be proactive about lowering mine. Thanks!
