Ob Firefly comments
Sep. 20th, 2002 11:07 pmMy vote? Meh. I don't feel passionate about it, I don't hate it either. But it's so hard to judge given that they had to pull this episode out of their asses at the last minute. I'm willing to give it a few more episodes to see if it gets its feet or not.
Likes: the captain was great. Good casting with that actor too. Liked the interaction between him and - here's where I show my ignorance b/c I've read none of the press for this show and don't know the character names or roles - first mate? Zoe? She was good, although the actress couldn't say the word "sir" believably.
The Joss dialogue was a nice breath of fresh air into a stale genre, although I agree that in some scenes it was gratuitous.
This was enough to make me want to try to watch again.
Dislikes - the girl playing the engineer or whatever she is. She. Can't. Act. All of her lines were painfully bad.
I'm neutral about the rest of the cast. I haven't seen enough of them to judge.
Except...
Why are Wes and Fred on this ship?
God - it is amazing that there are two people who look that much like Alexis and Amy. But scary that Joss wants them to. Joss, honey - the fuck?? Okay, you want a smart prissy guy on the ship - fine. It's an archetype. But much as I love Alexis did you have to cast his cousin in the role? It's just weird that it's the same damn character sans the glasses and the accent.
And what. The fuck. Is with Fred??? Joss - we didn't like her the first time, we're not going to like her now that you've Mary Sued her up even more. And at least Simon/Wesley was a smidge different. Medic instead of Watcher, American accent instead of British - it's not much but okay. Fred is Fred! There's no fucking difference! It's even the same mannerisms to indicate insanity AND the stupid pseudo science technobabble.
And am I the only one both creeped out and pissed off on behalf of Wes over on Angel? Joss obviously had this idea in his head for the tortured girl and the smart guy who took care of her, so poor fucking Wes got character raped for the God-damn beta version of this. Christ, no fucking wonder Wes suddenly knew how to operate medical equipment. As for being creeped out - it's a love triangle the first time, it's brother and sister now. Raise your hand if ew?
(BTW - remember the early spoilers for season 3 that said Wes's sister was joining the cast? Guess we knew what happened there.)
ARG! Get Fred the fuck off the show! Either of them! Both!!
Still - that being said, I'll keep watching. As I say it wasn't the definition of classic TV, but for an episode that they had to pull out of their ass with only one character who annoys the fuck out of me, I can give it the benefit of the doubt.
