Just because I'm anal...
Mar. 19th, 2002 05:39 pmAs the lovely C pointed out, my earlier A/W "Pronouncing Wes with a z" comment wasn't too clear. I meant that Angel was "from the UK" in that Angelus had spent a lot of time there, not that I thought Angel himself was a Brit. As we all know, Angel is French.
[ducking]
So - think I've given up on the Wesley plot bunny. It's one of those ideas that's a good idea, but isn't producing enough of a gut reaction in me to be worth persuing. You just get a feel for the stories that will and won't work, and this is one of them. Plus I'm going to be addressing some of the issues in it in Epiphany, which would mean I was essentially cribbing off of myself, which is stupid.
What do people feel, though, about seeing someone else's plot bunny, and trying it on your own? I don't mean totally stealing the idea, just doing a different take on the concept. Like "Clark loses his memory" is a concept. One person could write that concept as an angsty dramatic piece, another person could write it to be very lighthearted. But would it be bad for the second person to do that?
I get mixed feelings when I think of doing it myself. Which is funny because I actually don't mind it when people do it with my stories. I know of one story where the author confirmed for me that she got the idea off of one of my fanfics, and two others where both the content of the story and comments that the author made in another context gave me a very strong suspicion that they were doing their own takes on stories of mine.
Honestly I was fine with it. I actually thought it was cool that people liked the concepts enough to try their own versions. I suppose if I was an insecure sort of person I could sit here and panic that my original writing wasn't good enough and these people felt they had to "fix" it, but why? I like my writing - that doesn't mean anybody else has to. If somebody thinks that my fanfic should have had another ending, or another pairing, or another twist to the basic premise - well then go ahead and write your own! Why not?
But when I read someone's story and I'm the one sitting there thinking "Huh - I wouldn't have ended it that way" or "I think Angel would have said this instead of that" I can't help but feel that actually writing the story out would cross some sort of line of fanfic courtesy.
Any thoughts?
