Oh God this is funny. Somebody took it upon themselves to cut and paste my season 3 review of Angel to the Angel's soul spoiler board (I'm linking directly to the thread there). Now normally I'd be a bit miffed about somebody doing that without asking me (I don't like my email address passed around by anyone but myself) but they left the email off and included a link to the original entry so 'kay.
But GOD are some of the comments funny! Quite possibly the funniest is the one which says the review is too opinionated. Um - the point and welcome to it. Runner up for funniest comment is the amount of people who think that "The Brat QUEEN" is a guy.
(Granted - you can only see my name in the LJ link, so if these people don't read the link or click on it they wouldn't know my name. This now leads me to a very interesting sociology question of why do they assume that a review of this nature was written by a man?)
Rounding the bend we have people who don't read for content. Specifically:
"Mere Smith's episodes WERE important this season!"
Yes, and I agree. I said that they were irrelevant last season. You might have noticed that when I said it twice and didn't include her episodes in the list of "eps that in no way affected the 18 episode long story arc".
"If you don't like the show, stop watching!"
Uh - I do like the show, and you might have noticed that in the paragraphs that I dedicated to the wonder that is Angel and why the things that make it good are, to my knowledge, rare gems on American television. Also to the many paragraphs I dedicated to why the show worked.
"If you don't like the show, why are you on this board?"
Granted, maybe these comments were intended for the person who copied my review, but if they were aimed at me words can't express how much I need to remind you that I posted the review to my livejournal, home of my opinions.
"It's all negative!"
No, really it wasn't. Try reading it again. It's okay.
Heh. Anyway - thanks to Melanie for giving me the head's-up. =)
Don't mind me. First time poster, long time lurker. A friend of mine told me about the season 3 review being posted here. I ducked my head in to see what people were saying.
First off, to answer your question, I've got some reviews of the episodes up on my LiveJournal, which is where this season 3 wrap-up review was posted. The review for Tomorrow can be found here.
Second, just for context, I added some comments to the season 3 review when a friend of mine replied saying she hated the Wesley arc. Those comments can be found here.
I post all that not to pimp myself, but because some people here seemed to be wondering about stuff I didn't comment on and hey why repeat myself?
And as long as I've got the microphone (or keyboard as the case may be):
Yes, the review was opinionated. It's a review. They kinda do that. If I was going to be neutral I'd have called it a recap.
I didn't say Mere Smith's episodes were irrelevant this year. I said they were irrelevant last year in the sense of being necessary to the beige Angel story arc.
Me calling an episode irrelevant to the story arc wasn't a comment on its quality. It was a comment on it being irrelevant to the story arc. I think Carpe Noctem is an excellent example of an episode which was irrelevant to the overall season 3 story arc but which was still, IMO, a great and enjoyable episode.
Contrary to what a lot of people concluded, I am a fan of this show. But being a fan doesn't mean I check my brain at the door. If something's good, I'll say so. If it's not I'm also going to say so. And yes, if the point comes where the bad outweighs the good - well, damn. I'll get another free hour on my weekend. I think it's funny, though, that people could go through the paragraphs I wrote about how amazing and wonderful this show is, especially compared to its peers (and even to Buffy), and conclude I dislike the show. Far from it.
I'd also like to point out that I didn't post this review here, or to any other Angel or Buffy related board, mailing list, or where ever else it's gotten to since I wrote it. I posted it on my LJ, which is where I, you know, do journal type things. Like write my thoughts. These were my thoughts on the season, originally posted in a place where people would only read them if they gave a rat's butt about my opinion. If they didn't want to know what I thought they could just not go to my page.
Which isn't to say I'm mad about people who forwarded it around. Hey - color me flattered that people found it that interesting. But I like knowing the context for what people say, so I'm giving you mine. I wasn't trying to shove this review into people's faces with an author note of "READ AND AGREE WITH ME, GOD DAMN IT!". I posted it only for those who were interested. They were welcome to agree, disagree, or just keep reading the Sunday paper. I'm a flexible kind of gal.
Which brings me to my final point - Um... I'm a girl. Not sure how I turned into a "he" in all this. ;)
Anyway - thanks for letting me hijack the reply here. Back to lurkerdom I go.
