The weight question
Jul. 21st, 2002 09:45 pmRead with interest everyone's responses to my weight question earlier. Merci beaucoup for the thoughtful (and thought-provoking) replies.
One of the things that I find interesting is what size people would magic themselves down to. A few people in LJ and RL told me they'd be content at a size 16. This interests me because I'm 16/18 and I'm the one asking the question. Stuff like this can't help but make me want to swat whatever part of society started this thing where people aren't content where they are.
(Note - not that I'm not content just, as I said in the original entry, I could do with some good clothes and some smaller boobs. Strip me down naked and put me in front of a mirror and I'm content) (And apparently also narcissistic ;) )
I'm reminded of years ago when I was watching this daytime talkshow on Lifetime and they did a segment on bras. First up was bras for big boobed babes like me - how to minimize and avoid the bifocal boob problem. Next was bras for flatchested women - ergo miracle bras gallore.
Schmuck that I was, I actually sat there and waited to see the "normal" bras that just, you know, did whatever bras are supposed to do. Ha! Nope. Even the "normal" girls had bras to deal with their problems. I can't even remember what those problems were, only that it was very clear that in spite of passing the Goldilocks Test these women still weren't allowed to enjoy their cup size.
Shall we gather together for a round of blaming the media?
Speaking of the size question though, I've, well, another question for thems that read more fashion mags than I do (to wit: more than zero). Did we undergo a change in the past few years that dropped the "normal" size? Because I can remember when I was in junior high when a size six was considered just this side of rake thin (remember the twins in Sweet Valley High?) and now zero is apparently the thing.
When did that happen? And how did Amber Benson, who to all reports is a six, suddenly become a "cow"?
Seriously - I'm having an Angel pop culture "box?" moment here. Was I just ignorant before of how many actresses and models were size zeros or did the Calista Flockharts of the world cause a paradigm shift that the rest of us somehow failed to say "oh fuck that" to? Inquiring minds want to know.
