Where my notaries at?

So my boss indicated that it'd be a good idea for me to become a notary. The process looks fairly straightfoward, but one thing has me wondering. I know a few of you out there are notaries yourselves, so I thought you could fill me in. (And I realize the rules may vary from state to state, but still.)
According to this application form one of the things I need is a Certificate of Character (included in the form) which must be "filled out completely and signed by a public official or a reputable business or professional person who must be unrelated to you and has personally known you for at least one year."
Obviously my first instinct would be my boss, but he hasn't known me for a year so that's out. Next would be my old boss but... that would involve talking to him. 'nuff said.
So who would be a good person to get? The "public official... or professional person" is what's throwing me. Does that mean anybody with a job? Could I just get one of my friends to sign it? (And let's not even get into the wording issues that make it sound like a "reputable business" is one of the options, as I'd love to know how a business has a signature ;) )
Merci beaucoup in advance. =)
