Found this quote on the wonderful Kita's anti-blog page (Um - meaning that Kita herself is wonderful, although her anti-blog kicks ass too):
Meanwhile, curious Angel aficionados are begging us to answer a burning question: Is the Host gay? "It's supposed to be ambiguous," Hallett grins. "The Host has a lot of love for everybody. They don't go out and tell you, but the Host does call Angel 'Sweetie' and 'Cupcake' and all sorts of wild little pet names..."
-Andy Hallet Interview
Argh! Okay - time for a small rant. I dedicate it to my lack of sleep and my recent rewatching of The Celluloid Closet.
Why? Why, why, why, why, WHY?? Why?
There's my gut reaction. Now for some actual words to explain it -
I get that the show is on the WB. I get that because of that we're not going to see a lot of gay characters and especially not a lot of gay guys. I remember the horror that was Willow and Tara getting ready for "Thesbia". I'm down with the WB assitude.
However - this isn't the WB. This is Andy Hallet in an interview, clearly spouting what he's been told to say, undoubtedly in that same monotone voice that all the actors on the show have been using when they say "We love the WB, it has allowed us to be our own show separate from Buffy. It is better than Cats. We want to work with the WB again and again and again…"
And you know if it was just the interview I might not be so miffed. But they've been doing this on the actual show and it ticks me off. Joss himself wrote an ep where the Host out of nowhere starts talking about wanting to have sex with a woman and again I say to you - why?
Why does the same production company that still gave us Willow/Tara, stupid Thesbia metaphor and all, force Andy to spout some bullshit about this being "ambiguous"? It's not ambiguous! Wesley is ambiguous. The Host is the gayest character on TV this side of Smallville and Queer as Folk. Why can't they admit it?
Again - I get if this is the WB coming down hard on ME and telling them they already had one gay pairing in the Buffyverse and that's all they're allowed. Fine. But then just don't say he's gay! We figured it out on our own - we were happy with it! But to actually have the show and the actors deny it is a slap in the face. It's like they're saying they want all the pros of a gay character without any of the hardship and you know what? That's just rude.
Don't get me wrong - I still love Joss and Tim and all, I'm just seriously confused.
