More updates for those who'd like to help:
Wil Wheaton (Yes, that Wil Wheaton) is helping to organize two online poker tournaments with PokerStars matching the donations of everyone who plays. Benefits will go to the Red Cross's Hurricane 2005 fund. In addition to the matching donations for those who participate, Wil will be playing in the tournaments as well as offering special prizes such as autographed copies of his books. Read his blog entry if you want to learn more. (I don't know enough about Poker to squee over anyone's name except Wil's, but it's possible there are other big names involved if you know enough about Poker.)
I'd also like to take a moment to do a special shout-out to the organizations that are helping the animals that are stranded by the hurricane. I realize that to some people the idea of saving a cat or a dog when they could be saving a human is just ridiculous. I get that. But the people who are saving pets are not the ones with the resources to save humans. The refugees aren't going to be living in empty animal shelter cages, nor will they be eating donated bags of Purina.
Pets love their humans completely and unconditionally, and the thought of all the animals that are trapped in houses down there who have no idea that their mommies and daddies aren't coming back for them just kills me. I say without hyperbole that there are times when I would have totally given up on life if it wasn't for the thought of how horrible that would be for my two kitties. Mac and Luna have saved my life, and there's no way I'm turning my back on their brothers and sisters in the south.
So if you'd like to make donations to help out the animals as well, here's the links:
Noah's Wish, which specializes in rescuing animals from disaster areas.
Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, Humane Society of the United States' Disaster Relief Fund, both of which are working towards trying to feed and shelter the animals stranded by Katrina. Of note, HSNL can only take Paypal donations online but HSUS can take those without Paypal accounts. (Also of note, HSNL is partnered with the Mystik Krewe of Barkus, for those of us who have a fond place in our hearts for that Krewe.)
ETA: The Houston SPCA is housing a lot of the animals displaced by Katrina, so donations to them will also help.
Others have added more links and suggestions in the comments, so be sure to check those out too.
