I wasn't orignially planning on watching Live 8 but since I'm working around the house today it's pretty good background noise to have on.
My impressions so far? The UK is so kicking Philly's ass. I mean come on people: Coldplay on Bittersweet Symphony? Sgt. Pepper not only performed live but with U2? Awwwh yeah.
I feel frustrated watching it though, and not just because MTV apparently really is physically incapable of allowing a song to be played on their TV station. As much as I believe in the concept and as much as the idea reminds me of when the world decided to get rid of smallpox, I look at this and know in my heart of hearts it's not going to happen. I mean come on: you know Bush won't do it. He's going to go to G8, be an asshole, and at best he'll come out with a speech full of Bushisms about how help and aid will be applied, and in the end not one red cent will get over there and not one bit of debt will be forgiven.
Which of course is utterly ridiculous from a political standpoint because dear God could Bush up his Q rating if he went through with this. It wouldn't make up for all the other things that he and the US have done to become hated throughout the world but at least it would be something. I mean how frikkin' sad is it that so far Bono has done more to end debt in third world countries than a leader of one of the first world countries? (Which is not a slam against Bono, just an agreement with his own point that all he is is a rock star who can use his fame to bring attention to the problem.)
But who knows? Maybe I'm wrong. It would be cool if I was. I feel like my generation needs more goodness to make up for the crap that's been done. I realize there's a lot of bad in the world and this is only one charity of many but hey - gotta start somewhere.
Now to go cross items off the To Do list.
