Veterans Day

A patient was just in the office. She's from Russia. Because of the quality of care she gets here, she was inspired to say this, in her heavily accented English:
"Zis is a gud country. Here you haf choices. If you vant gud medical care, you get gud medical care. If you vant education, you get education. If you vant job, you get job. I marry an American man. Ve are not same religion, but if I vant to marry heem, I marry heem. Here you haf choices."
And while this is both a simplistic view of both the country she left and the country she came to, and while this country doesn't have enough choices for everyone in terms of health, education, jobs, or marrying who you love, it's still a beautiful thing to sit back and remember what the core of this country is, even if we're not all the way there yet.
So, to all the veterans out there: thank you for protecting my country of choices.
