Days off

Like everyone else, I've heard the news about Christopher Reeve. I couldn't help but admire his attitude after the accident. I know he had emotional downswings, but for the most part he seemed to exude a sort of stubborn optimism, and a belief that one day it would be right. Which just goes to show he was the perfect guy to embody the role.

I've never been much of a Superman fan. The most you can get me with DC comics is Batman, and the immediate surrounding characters. Supe always struck me as a bit dweeby, and Gary Stuish. That being said, after 9-11 I read an essay by someone who said that their immediate reaction was to think of the movies, and the line "Where are you, Superman?" which I felt fairly accurately summed up how such a horrible tragedy reduced us all to childlike shock, and disbelief. There's supposed to be a superhero that comes in and stops stuff like that. Superman might not have been the guy who got me buying comic books, but he was certainly who you'd think of when trying to picture someone flying in to save the day, and Christopher Reeve conveyed that purity of heart in both the movies and in real life. It's a shame we lost him.

I'm spending my day off doing day-offy things. I have a copy of [livejournal.com profile] ats_nolimits episode 4 sitting here on my desktop, and I believe [livejournal.com profile] flaming_muse would very much like to swoop in and take it out of my hands if I would just! stop! futzing with it! My compulsiveness about such matters knows no bounds.

On the plus side, once I send that off then I'm not down on the schedule for any writing for a while, which will free up huge chunks of my schedule that I can use to once again start multitasking other things. My boss will be going away to San Francisco for a week and a half starting this Thursday, so look for me to take all that extra free time in the office and write as much indulgence fic as my fingers can type.

I'm also cooking today. Roast chicken, so that I can have real food without too much effort on my part. This lingering sickness thing is for the birds, pardon the expression, though I have discovered that if you throw a tablespoon of homemade pesto into a pot of canned soup, it actually sort of tastes like food.

I've discovered a new show, which is actually a few years old Canadian show but it's new to me. Pioneer Quest, which I think can be summed up as "Frontier House, but more hardcore and in Canada." Two couples who live like the pioneers did for an entire year. I've just seen episode 1, and I've got the rest season passed on my Tivo. I swear I could watch hours and hours of programming like this and never get bored. I'm simply fascinated by the minute details of how people once lived their daily lives. I'm not even too picky about time period. Anywhere about 1950 or earlier would do it for me.

Don't suppose anyone's got some book recs in that area? I'm particularly interested in how women lived, but could be open to men too (how appropriate, for National Coming Out Day, eh? ;) )

Back to day offy things!
