Little bit o' this, little bit o' that

thebratqueenFirst off, thanks to those who gave snuggles and suggestions about the light headedness problem from the other day. I drank lots of water and today I am doing fine. Sunburn's coming along nicely too ;)

metablog had a link to this post regarding 'When Fans Attack' which seems to have sparked some interest. I have to say that on the whole I read it with mixed feelings. Because while yes, I do agree that it would be nice if fandom didn't have assholes in it, I've got to disagree with the idea that A) We have pound for pound more assholes today than yesterday and with the idea that B) A non-asshole society can ever be created.
I mean think about it - fandom is made up of people here on earth. We don't bus them in from somewhere else. Someone who's an asshole in fandom pretty much tends to be an asshole everywhere else too. This is not a problem that fandom created. We're looking more at a symptom of the whole.
Not that I'm saying we should then throw up our hands and let assholes reign. I'm just saying we need to understand what we're working with. Kerfuffles and flamewars and general asshattednes has been around since the days when Lilith wrote Cain/Abel and posted it to alt.religion.stories.bible.goingtohellnow and it'll be around long after.
Also, can we stop with the lack of perspective? Nobody's taking anything from us. The worst asshole in the world, barring their ability to shoot me in the head, can't take my fic away from me. That's the magic of the internet. There's room for everyone, assholes and all.
In that vein, I'd like to close with a quote:
"In fandom first they came for the Mary Sues, and I did not speak up because I wasn't a Mary Sue writer. Then they came for the MPreggers, and I did not speak up because frankly I never understood that faction either. Then they came for RPS, and I didn't speak up because - well hey, who doesn't hate boybands? Then they came for me, and I told them to get the Hell over themselves, deleted their messages out of my inbox, ignored whatever LiveJournal communities they created for their groups and somehow, amazingly, my life went on."
