madpoetess's comment about what is slash? Wherein she mentioned that everytime the question comes up, some wag feels the need to say "Well actually there are those in fandom who use slash to mean m/f pairings."
Okay people - slash is SAME SEX PAIRINGS. There's no "well actually" about it. This isn't one of those times where stupid people get to redefine the term. Five thousand people could call a car a submarine if they liked, but that doesn't mean it's going to work underwater. Slash can't ever mean m/f pairings because we need to keep these parts of fandom in different categories. Otherwise we're going to have some real annoying problems the next time, say, Connexions rolls around. And moreover we're just going to need to find a new term to define same-sex pairings if "slash" does get co-opted by the hetters so just leave the word the fuck alone!
Sorry, this just annoys the Hell out of me. I understand how some of the kidets get confused - yeah, it looks like it could mean NC-17, so if you see an NC-17 het story you think it's slash. But don't fucking "correct" people when they tell you it's not, and don't start some kind of political movement to "claim slash for het pairings". HET IS NOT SLASH. GAH!
What bugs me especially about this is that the term slash got made to fucking protect the het people (and the ones writing it). Slash fans don't want to hear your little rants about how "XYZ just can't be gay!!" so we put a fucking label on our stuff so you know to take your ass elsewhere and leave us alone. Now if you want to do a return courtesy you can label your own fics "het" so I know not to read your POS story about Angel and Cordy happily raising kids and picking daisies, but the thing is you don't have to because you aren't considered the freak show for writing that kind of thing, while us slash fans are.
And don't talk to me about canon slash. I fucking helped create VC fanfic and you know what? It's still slash. Granted you don't have to label it as such because anyone who wants to read VC stuff and doesn't recognize that most of the characters are gayer than a summer frock is just not reading for content, but it's still fucking slash. Same thing for QAF, same thing for Willow/Tara, etc. etc. world without end amen.
Now go forth and smack anyone who tells you different.
