Things that make you go hmmm

thebratqueenFound this link to an article about TWOP while surfing friendsfriends. I can't say I agree 100% with it but it's definitely nailed down one of the big problems the site has and why I stopped reading it years ago, viz. it's hard to appreciate a snarky review when you realize the reviewer has so totally missed the point of what the episode was aiming for that they might as well have been watching a different show (see also the article's example of the review for The Zeppo).
I find this problem comes up with any site/community/whatever where the entire point is to find fault. FW, BadBuffyFics, TWOP and things like it start out funny, then get so stuck in the mindset of fault-finding that they don't take the necessary step back to see what the actual goal was. Case in point the times when I'd see fics laughed at on BadBuffyFics (or whatever it's going by these days) that were deliberately written as badfic parodies, except whoopse, the BBF people didn't catch that. Ditto TWOP where the recappers these days far too often go in with their idea of what the episode was supposed to be and if the actual plot doesn't match up with that the show failed. It's at the point where you half expect a Trading Spaces review to bitch about the fact that there were no cooking demonstrations.
