Angel 4.21 Peace Out
May. 1st, 2003 12:06 amAhhh.
It's so nice when David Fury is kept on a tight leash.
Oh, sure, there were some moments. Angel's speech at the end especially had me gritting my teeth a little and muttering for Fury to shut up and just let the moment happen, but still it's a minor quibble.
Slightly more major quibble, but only comparatively speaking, is Jasmine at the end. Zuh? What was the kiss? What were those Terminator-style quips? And why turn Jasmine bitchy when your point is to introduce ambiguity?
And where was the champion line????
(You spoiler whores know what I'm talking about)
Still, other than my minor quibbles this was a great ep. Again I find my hands tied in my comments due to both time and not wanting to include spoilers, but still - wow. Beautifully shot. The steadycam into the church and Wes pacing in the back of the cage are two moments that especially stand out to me. Plus you guys know I'm a sucker for directors that let characters think onscreen and Wes did that not once but twice today.
Amazing acting by Vincent in Connor's monologue. And not to make my reviews all about comparing Angel and Buffy, but damn it I just can't help it. Compare the out of nowhere actions that lead to the mutiny on this week's Buffy to the far more subtle build of Connor being put in a place where Angel's so worried about him that he can't stop babbling until Lilah shows up. Also note now Angel the show is handling metaphors much better than Buffy has these past two years. Connor, when you get right down to it, is every teenaged boy. He feels out of place, uncertain, unconnected - but this is all done in big, mythical storylines that still feel real. This is the great stuff the show can do.
Now there's other great stuff the show can do, and of course here we're talking about the latest developments with regards to the Powers, and Angel's place in all this, but I'm going to keep my mouth shut about that until next week. Suffice it to say for now I am very, very happy.
Other random notes:
How hot did Alexis look this week? I'm telling ya, I'm convinced the only reason that the others weren't lining up to give him blowjobs when he was leaning against the bars of the cage was because Angel's scared everyone off who dares to touch him ;)
Way to spoil the ending by putting Stephanie's name in the opening credits, guys. Couldn't pull a Trial again by leaving it out?
Much as I didn't like the seriously unnecessary quips at the end (and AGAIN what was up with that kiss?) I have to admit Jasmine throwing the car was way cool.
Liked the dynamics between Wes and Connor during the initial fight scene. Maybe it's me but I felt it all had extra layers to it given that Wes had a hand in making Connor the man he is today.
Did you notice Angel staring at Wes when noticing that everyone was still alive?
Did you notice they included the Angel/Wes look from last week in the previouslies because the show loves me?
And at this point I'm out. Too tired to comment further. Loved loved LOVED the ep, and I promise lots of good conversation about the big plot points once we get to next week and the - sob - final ep of the season.
