Baking, and death
Nov. 13th, 2004 02:37 pmIf there is a more evil and soul-destroying thing to encounter on a Saturday morning than a couple of jackasses with leaf blowers, I don't know what is. My hopes for a lazy morning of sleeping in were crushed when the gardeners for my co-op complex parked their equipment right outside of my bedroom (to be fair, not at Oh My God in the morning, but still as far as I'm concerned if the clock says "AM" and it's Saturday, it's still too damned early) and thus ruined my ability to stay asleep. I finally gave up and trundled into the livingroom, only by then they'd moved to the courtyard. And since my apt is flanked by the courtyard on two sides, this effectively means that I can't escape this noise no matter what. Also I can't keep my windows open even a crack, because I need whatever noise protection I can get, so there goes the nice, crisp, fresh air.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Still, the morning has some good points. In spite of my predictions it did apparently flurry sometime between yesterday and today. It's bright and sunny out now, but there's a dusting of snow to be seen on the ground.
I considered this good enough excuse to make waffles. Not a proper snow day, but close enough. =)
I learned the error of my ways in terms of foolishly buying oranges that are not yet in season. I got my hopes up (this being prior to the discovery of Whole Foods near me) and bought a couple from the local megamart, just because we're theoretically getting near the season for oranges, so I figured it'd be okay.
Nope, my bad. Foulest tasting thing I'd ever had. So I gave up on eating it and instead dumped it into a pot of water with a couple of cinnamon sticks, which I then put on simmer. I've never done the "Fill the house with scent via nice-smelling things in water" thing before, so Lord knows if I'm doing it right. But if I am I figure there's worse combos than cinnamon and orange. Plus that way the orange doesn't give its life up for no good reason.
I've got some dough set to rise to make foccacia later, and sausage and polenta and a nice salad will be dinner tonight.
Beyond that I'd love to get some writing, or NL related work done, but as long as the stupid leaf blowers are out I can't keep a narrative thought in my head.
Too bad human beings can't do that thing where they pull an entire pillow through their head to help block their ears. I'd so be doing that now if I could.
