More details
Jul. 3rd, 2004 01:34 pmOkay, making phone calls turned out to be much quicker than I thought it would. Apparently there's not much you can do when somebody hits you on a holiday weekend.
So here's the story -
Last night while I was driving down the street in front of my co-op complex, this idiot pulls out of his driveway in his big ol' SUV/truck type thing and drives right into me (or more specifically right into my back passenger side). Bear in mind for the viewers at home that I drive a four door Ford Focus. So you can guess who sustained the most damage here.
I say the guy was an idiot because it was the world's most avoidable accident. I was on the street, I wasn't going fast, and he had actually been waiting at the very end of his driveway to pull out into the street himself. So it's not even as though he was being stupid and sped onto the street, or as though I zipped out in front of him out of nowhere. No, he was idle, I drove by at maybe 10 miles an hour, and for some odd reason he decided to drive right into my car instead of waiting for the way to be clear. My guess is that he was driving with his eyes closed, or something.
Oh - and he was also driving forward. I have to admit I was both vindicated and amused when I called my insurance company later and the woman asked "So was there any damage to the back of his car?" And I said "No, he drove straight into me. It was the front of his car." and she said "Wait - you mean he wasn't even backing out?"
When I pulled my car to the side of the road and went to talk to him the first thing he said was "That was my fault." Oh, ya think?
Also for your amusement value, at the time that I was standing out there to talk to him and get his information the sky had opened and the heavens were pouring down in one of those quick summer storms that's there and gone in five minutes. I mention this not because it bears on the accident (as only random drops were falling at the moment of impact) but because it meant that while I was trying to talk to him I was then soaking wet... and wearing a white T-shirt. I can only assume this made it easier for me to get his information.
So the passenger side of my car is scraped and dented up. Fortunately not too badly. The car works just fine, and the damage looks to be mostly cosmetic. I mean not that it's healthy for a car to have dents and even tiny holes in it, but considering that if he'd been going fast I wouldn't have a passenger-side of my car anymore I'd say I fared pretty well.
As for myself I've got a tiny bit of lower back pain, which I'm guessing is from being jarred when he hit me. Otherwise no damage that I can tell. I left a message at my doctor's office just to be on the safe side, but it's the holiday weekend and it's not an emergency so who knows? Likewise all the autobody shops are closed so all I could do was leave messages about wanting to try to book an appointment.
On the plus side, though, my insurance company was insanely helpful, and the girl did not mock my laughably poor information-taking skills, though she had every right to do so ("So what's his address?" "Umm... he works as a super next door. I didn't think to ask because I figured worst case senario I could track him down on foot if I had to." "What about his date of birth?" "I was supposed to ask that? Crap. I'm sorry. I've never had anybody hit me before. I didn't know there was a form.")
So that's about that. Looks like I've done all I can do, so I'm back to running errands and such again. Supposedly the day after an accident is when you feel the worst pain, so if all I have is this sort of stiffness in my lower back then I'm going to guess that I'm okay. And the car still drives fine so that's a happy thing. I guess I'll be missing some work this week if I still have to go in and get checked by a doctor, or if I can't get an appointment to drop my car off outside of working hours, but again all of this could have been much, much worse so I can't really complain.
I am minorly eepy, but I can't really complain. =)
