As I ponder various plot arcs for two, I hope, vastly different series, I find myself thinking of authors I enjoy reading and how I react when I read things of theirs that differ.

I think part of the joy of fanfic is finding out the various interpretations of the characters. One author sees Angel one way, another plausibly argues for another view. Both make just as much sense. So not only do you get a good story, but you now have a new way of looking at the source material.

But I wonder how much of that comes into play with the same author. In other words - how much do you read an author because you like her work, and how much do you read her because you like her interpretation? If you read one author because she writes a kick-ass Jim and Blair shopping for curtains, are you going to feel satisfied if she then goes and writes another story where Blair's going to kill himself and Jim couldn't care less? Was it the shmoop or the writing style that drew you in?

I think for me it can vary. Some authors have a writing style that I love and enjoy reading no matter what they're writing, so I'm more inclined to follow wherever they go. Others, though, I read because I like the specific worlds they create, so if they veer far off course from the world I'm familiar with, I may not be as likely to follow.

I guess it all depends on what I'm in the mood for.
