Apres Oscar wrap-up
Mar. 25th, 2002 01:04 pmYay! Halle and Denzel won! Woo! It's about freaking time!!! [happy dance] That alone almost makes up for the downsides.
The downsides?
1. Randy Newman does not deserve an Oscar. You know why he hasn't won in 15 nominations? Because his songs suck. Maybe twenty years ago he deserved one, but not now. Not when Sting - who did an excellent performance of Until, which is a beautiful song - and Paul McCartney of all people were nominated. You're telling me Randy Newman is better than one of the Beatles? I think not.
2) LotR did not win best screenplay. Excuse me, have you idiots read the book? Wait - I just answered my own question. But it's an absolute travesty that LotR didn't take that category. Judges will allow Best Director to Ron Howard because he's overdue and LotR has two more shots coming up, but not best screenplay? Are you on crack??
3) Tom Cruise's speech at the beginning. Started good, ended bad. Yes, they needed to do some kind of 911 acknowledgement. That was not the way to do it. "Dare I say it? Now, more than EVER!" Okay, first off now, more than ever, people need to stop saying "now, more than ever". Second "now" is the last time we need the industry that gave us Glitter, Queen of the Damned, and Josie and the Pussycats to sit there cocksucking itself. Should the ceremony go on? Yes. But not with that attitutde. I think they would have been better served by opening the ceremony with Woody Allen's bit and the film tribute and finished it with a screen that said "We'll never forget" before going in to the ceremony proper.
Finally, for my "Huh?" moments - Cirque du Soliel. Love them, have no idea why they were there. Is the ceremony just not long enough? Cameron Diaz - what was with the hair? It's the Oscars, run a comb through it. Jennifer Lopez - whatever you did to your hair stylist, apologize immediately.
Halle and Denzel won! Halle and Denzel won! Halle and Denzel won!!! Yay!!!!
