You know it's the little fucking things that clue you in to people who were nowhere NEAR the tragedy when it happened.
Look, I'm not putting you folks down. Have your "Enough" movements and your "Turn off the TV!" movements and whatever the fuck you need to get yourself through 9-11-02 sane and intact. But stop patting yourselves on the god-damned back about it like you've achieved a moral highground here. Like it's such a fucking ACCOMPLISHMENT that you've figured out that news reports are gratuitous and Bush has co-opted 9-11 for his own agenda faster than you can say "Let's use Columbine to post the 10 Commandments in public schools." You know why? WE GET IT.
But here's what YOU need to get: You don't get this tragedy. I'm sorry, but you don't. You know what it's like when your grandpa/mother/significant other dies a sudden and horrible death and you're sitting there in SHOCK and you can't even cope and some well-meaning dipwad walks up to you and pats you on the shoulder and says "I know what it's like - my gerbil died last year."? THAT is how you get this.
You don't get what it's like for those who were in the towers/pentagon/planes. You don't get what it's like for those living near Ground Zero. You don't get what it's like for those who had relatives and friends in the area who had to put up signs and watch a death count. You don't know what it's like to have BREATHED IN DEAD HUMANS FOR MONTHS.
You don't know what it's like to have a part of you ripped out because someone broke your sky. You don't have friends and family who STILL aren't all right because of the literal year now of dealing with a wound that's just not going to go away that easily.
And excuse the FUCK out of us if some of us are going to mark the anniversary of 9-11 by thinking about, gee, I dunno, 9-11 and the people who died there and the families that suffered and, quite frankly, what we went through too, and don't feel like fucking joining you in a big theoretical "Let's all hug and share and think of EVERYBODY who's ever died badly" because IT'S BEEN ONE FUCKING YEAR. Can we have a little time here? Did I miss the Emily Post that said we've got less than a year to forget about the THOUSANDS that died? Excuse me all to Hell if I take the anniversary of these people's deaths to remember THEM, and not fucking LUMP THEM IN with other people like it's all the god-damned same.
Look - I don't agree with Dubya on pretty much everything. And yeah, he's raped 9-11 and used the Constitution for a condom while he did it. But don't confuse the asshole with the victim.
So yeah, have your "enough" day and your "I've got two braincells and can figure out that the news is a waste of time" day or whatever. But can I throw in a suggestion here? Have a COUNT YOUR FUCKING BLESSINGS DAY because if the theoretical academic concepts of what happened after 9-11 are the BIGGEST problems you have to worry about and mark this Wednesday - BE FUCKING GLAD.
