Okay people, let's see how late I am for work. Why do I know I'll be late for work? Because I got up early. I'm never on time for anything when I get up early.

Finally got that stupid CDROM to work. We'll see if it will actually work once I get it to the school but I remain, however stupidly, hopeful.

It was actually a good little course. It's on customer service (we all pause now to laugh at the idea of me teaching good customer service) and I knew I would like it as soon as I saw the lesson "The customer is not always right." I hate stores that have that policy. Esp. the ones that go even further and post that up near the front door, usually written out as "Rule #1 - the customer is always right. Rule #2 - if the customer is wrong, see Rule #1". Logic, see circular.

I hate stores that do that because it's such an obvious sign (no pun intended) that whoever is in charge of this store A) thinks platitudes are good management and B) hasn't spent enough time on the front lines actually dealing with the customers. The truth is the customer is not always right, and trying to make the customer right can often get you fired or run the store out of business. The better thing to do is have a good attitude and try to work with the customer to find an acceptable solution.

I suspect this class is going to involve a lot of my own (and probably the students' as well) stories from the frontlines. One thing I wish the CD had gone into more detail with - and which I'll be making up for as I teach - is the concept of how dealing with all the jerks in the public can make you lose faith in humanity. The CD says you shouldn't stereotype all customers as bad, which is true, but you still need some method for dealing with that stress all the same.

What cracks me up is that whenever the concept of how difficult it is to deal with the public comes up in a general conversation, some helpful wag always tries to chime in with "Well if you don't like dealing with the public, why are you in this job?" Um - because every job involves dealing with other people, last I checked? It's called wanting to pay my rent, moron, but thanks for playing.
