Packing? Still not done.

But on the other hand I bought a stepladder (with which to fix the lights), fixed the lights, drove around town and found A) garages that were open and B) garages that could fix my car today for C) a resaonable price.

Turns out my tire just blew and undoubtedly this is something I should have called the dealer about (the car itself being just over a year old) but frankly I couldn't be bothered. Well - I did call just to see if they were open, but they weren't and when confronted with the choice between waiting until tomorrow to have the headache of dealing with the dealer or just geting the #$%^ing tire replaced today, I picked today.

The last time I went to the dealer was when I needed my first oil change and I needed something replaced as part of a recall. The recall was free, the oil change was supposed to be. Fifty bucks later (for an OIL CHANGE. OIL CHANGE!) and I never went back. I'd still recommend the dealer in terms of "didn't talk down to me, didn't dick me over on the price of the car" but their service department can bite me.

This meant I had to find a new garage in town since the only ones I'd found so far did oil changes only. I suppose I could have gone to my folks' garage but I just get the vibe that this place isn't 100% good in the "not dicking you over" dept so I decided not to.

Instead I hit one place that I just passed by, and another which had a coupon in the Sunday circular. The first didn't have any tires to sell me and the other, well, obviously did.

It was nice on both parts though because neither place did the "Oh ho, little lady, while you're here let's talk about your grankershaft and balling winches and other made up words that you won't know about because you're a girl." They just examined the tire, told me the problem - told it to me truthfully because I actually do know about tires and cars (I can change my own oil and would if I had a private driveway, I can check fluids, pump gas, replace filters and so on) and I could tell they weren't snowing me and just fixed the car.

(Side note - it was kind of funny for me yesterday because it was my Big Brother who discovered my flat tire, and he and Dad commenced to get the instruction book, jack, spare, etc. and set about figuring out how to replace it themselves. They were so happy and eager about it I didn't have the heart to tell them that I already know how to change a tire and, based on the look of things, I'm probably more skilled at it than they are. But then again I also was really tired - no pun intended - and had a headache so, gee, look how well that worked out ;) )

In other happy news I hauled my microwave out of the old apt and brought it here. This makes life here much easier because now I can actually heat leftovers.

Yeah, I know.

I know somehow in the grand scheme of things people heated up leftovers without microwaves but the thing is I don't know how they did that. I've got memories of Mom putting a plate of food in the oven on a low setting to keep dinner warm for Dad, and likewise memories of when we got our first microwave and Dad spending months (I don't exagerrate, just meet my Dad and see) saying " It's moist! So this is what it's supposed to taste like!" once he tasted reheated food a la microwave, but beyond that I've no idea how Mom reheated leftovers without that magic box.

This is also why, amongst other reasons, I'm stumped by [livejournal.com profile] tenebraeli's question of when, pre 1900 I would live. I'm very much a modern girl. I'd be lost without modern cookery, I'm telling ya.
