Occasionally I have these Run Lola Run type moments of freezing on something I just did and wondering what the outcome would be in a different dimension where instead of doing X I did Y. Very often this happens when I've narrowly avoided a car accident, and I think to myself I'm glad I'm not living in the dimension where my anti-lock brakes didn't kick in and I'm now embedded into I-95.

I was thinking about that this weekend when I read a passage on a book jacket that basically said something I agree with, which is that when bad things happen you've no way of knowing if they're going to put you on the path to good things, so take the bad thing as a possible opportunity of goodness (or, one of my fav Simpsons words, a crisitunity).

I had a moment like that a few years back when I got laid off my job. I liked my job and the people there and I was very upset to lose it, but even as my boss was explaining it to me I felt detached and thought to myself "I'm going to be glad this happened. At some point in the very near future I'm going to be glad that this occured."

Which, sure enough, was true. Because if I hadn't lost my job then I might have been less likely to move cross-country again, and if I hadn't done that I would've missed out on a Hell of a lot of things, from as big as owning my own home (or at least forking money over for a mortgage) to being here for when my 3rd niece gets born to having been here when 9-11 went down and so on.

No real thesis statement beyond that. Just that it's nice to look at some of the decisions made and go "Yeah, that was a good one."
