Apr. 16th, 2003 12:41 pmSaw Lighten Up yesterday. For those not in the know, it's a show on the Food Network starring 2 former producers of Rosie O'Donnell's show and basically what they do is have one of them make a regular meal, then the other one shows how to do a similar meal but healthier.
I liked the concept of it, esp since the healthy meal was, legitimately, something that would still be nifty to eat and taste good without too much extra effort. I also liked that their goal was something like the "80% rule" which, though I never heard them define it, I was able to glean from context meant that as a rule you should just try to do a little bit better than you're currently doing, instead of starving yourself. So points for that.
Points taken away, though, for the whole thing being too schticky. The patter was too fake, and tried too hard. I also didn't get why one of the women felt a need to dress fat (oversized shirt) when she was obviously thin, and I disliked the jokes that basically broke down to "women be different from men" in that "we want jewelry and they won't put the toilet seat down" kind of way.
For the intended audience I guess it works, but I don't know if I'm that audience. If you're a 50something housewife in the midwest this might be the show for you.
