Dec. 22nd, 2005
The end result on the present question was a book about wine (From Fifteen's wine guy, no less) for the boss, and a wooden puzzle for the 2 year old.
Lemme just say that it sucks to be 2. All the cool toys happen at 3! There was this wooden puzzle that had fish on it, and the fish had metal things in them and the puzzle came with a fishing rod with a magnet on the end. How cool is that? I'd play with that toy! But no, 3 and up, so not for the 2 year old. Sadness.
While at the store I used the charity gift wrappers b/c I knew I'd be too busy tonight to wrap my boss's gift by tomorrow. It was actually nice. It was these two grandmothers who were very sweet, and we chatted about kids and how even when you're buying toys for babies you sometimes get the urge to play with the toy yourself. Then a guy came by with a book about horses for his daughter and we chatted about that too. It was this nice pocket of quiet and human connection in anotherwise chaotic week.
Tonight I'm starting the cooking for Sunday. Chocolate cheesecake cupcakes are cooling on the rack, waiting to be cool enough for me to slather frosting on them. They took much longer to make than I'd give them credit for (from now on? Brownie cheesecake bars. Same coolness factor, much easier to prepare.) So now I'm debating the likelihood of making something else tonight. Magic 8 ball says: Unlikely.
Between now and Sunday I have to make:
* Sugar almonds
* Fudge-filled cookies
* Spinach & Artichoke dip
* Rice pilaf
* Red onion gravy
* 2 brunch breads (stuffed with eggs, basil, cheese, sundried tomatoes, and pancetta)
That way all the food for Christmas will be done and merely in need of heating up, save the roast loin of pork which will get done on Sunday itself.
I also have to wrap presents, though fortunately thanks to shared gifts there's not too many to wrap this year.
There is a nice stack of pressies under the tree for me. My thanks to those who have sent them. I'm waiting until Sunday to actually open them up.
This is the first year I'm doing that. The temptation is killing me, lemme tell ya.
Back to the kitchen I go...
