Katrina coverage
Aug. 29th, 2005 09:13 amHey, did you know that absolutely everything in New Orleans is either in or near the French Quarter? It's true! It's amazing how this tiny group of blocks manages to hold the Superdome, Tulane University - I think the Denver International Airport is in there too. At least, according to the news media that's where everything is.
Also, you know when you pay attention to news about New Orleans you get used to the cliches. It's like a drinking game: how long does it take before they get to the cheesy pun? "New Orleans, where the good times are not rolling today." or "New Orleans, where the population is as diverse as the ingredients for spicy jambalaya." or whatever. But, dude, what jackass thought up "Toxic Gumbo" as the best way to describe what could happen if the city floods and gets polluted by the oil supply?
I'm also amazed at the skillfullness at which CNN completely fetishizes and stokes the hysteria of whatever's happening. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying a cat. 4 hurricane is bringing hugs and puppies, but there's reporting on that and then there's fanning the flames of every report that comes in with questions like "So are people panicking? Have you heard screams? Are the police completely overrunn with emergency calls? Is the police station even safe?"
Ahh, news. There's a reason why I refuse to watch you unless I absolutely have to.
