Ah, memories
Nov. 16th, 2004 03:37 pmIt's recently come to my attention that it was just over 10 years ago that I officially joined online fandom, and it's just under 10 years since I started writing fanfic (sometime in Dec 94/Jan 95. Can't remember when I started posting now.)
10 years from a date like that is an odd little anniversary because unlike round numbers for decades or even high school reunions, it doesn't mark a specific milestone in life so much as it marks a random moment in time. I'm finding this makes for an interesting mental time capsule of who I was back then and what I was doing, and who I am now and what I'm doing. (The opinionated outspoken thing? Hasn't much changed. I know you're shocked).
Oh!! And I just realized this means it'll be about 10 years or so since I've been TBQ. How appropriate that
gimme_that would reappear out of the woodwork recently, as she's the one who gave me that nickname all those years ago.
Gosh. Memories. Usenet and pine and being in college and cell phones being called "flip phones" or "car phones" still. Me having no idea how much I'd travel or all the neat people I'd meet...
You know I'm finding that when I look back then the first thing that leaps to mind is "But I didn't know ____ back then!" and then I start missing you guys. You, who I know through fandoms that didn't even exist at the time, or through discussions of politics that couldn't have happened because the internet hadn't evolved enough to allow it to happen. [sniffle] I'd miss you!
Given that it's a 10 year anniversary of writing fic, part of me wonders if I should do something to mark the occasion. My first thought is "Hey, I should do a fic set in my first fanfic fandom". My second is "Or I could just go for a walk around the block and by doing so get outside and into the sunlight, which is also a nice thing to do."
What's the typical gift for 10 years of fanfic writing anyway? I assume if the donations of a life during years 1-9 didn't take effect, all that's left is Milka and porn? If so, can we skip straight to the porn? Simon/Jayne please. I'm not above making requests 8)
(Bot smilies, also not around 10 years ago.... )
(Regardless, I think tonight I should write porn. Or at least Protocol. We'll see if that leads into anything porny.)
Monkeys!
