On the subject of spoilers
Feb. 11th, 2004 08:23 pmI realize this is me getting on my high horse, but you know me. I'm not what you'd term "quiet".
Dear Fellow Spoiler Whores:
For the most part you're doing a kick ass job of keeping spoilers hidden. However, when doing commentary on recently aired episodes you might want to make it clearer in your cut tag if you're discussing only that episode, or if you're discussing that ep, the trailer, and/or spoilers to come. Sometimes people will do a cut tag of, say "The latest episode of Angel" and then go on to include every spoiler in the book, which messes it up for people who clicked the tag thinking no spoilers lurked within. Just an adjustment of the cut tag (eg "The latest ep of Angel, plus spoilers for next week") would be appreciated by a lot of people.
Dear Spoiler Virgins:
We're trying, honest. But the WB promo department is run by crack whores. I'm very sorry (honestly) that some of you got spoiled for upcoming episodes thanks to icons that are going around (with a mea culpa that one such icon was publically available on one of my posts until I put it behind a cut tag) but unfortunately some of those pictures aren't spoiler shots. Those are from ads. As in the WB is spending I have no idea how many thousands of dollars to get that information out there. It sucks donkey balls, I know, but it wasn't us going into the super secret spoiler sites and putting the info out there. It was public info. (Well - for the most part. But OTOH once the first pic leaked the others are kind of academic.)
I agree, I do, that it sucks and sucks hugely. I wouldn't have put that info into promos in a million years. But the WB didn't ask us about it and they are, again, run by crack whores. The point at which the knowledge is pretty much like unto "By the way, Angel might also be appearing in next week's ep" is the point at which the spoiler warning isn't as cut and dry an issue as, say, Rosebud being the name of the sled.
I'm not saying you don't have a right to be pissed (especially since the trailer for next week's ep hadn't even aired yet, which, IMO, does make it more of a spoiler than common knowledge). I'm just saying that this might not be entirely due to the spoiler whores en masse deciding that they were going to stop having common courtesy. The WB muddied the waters hardcore and unfortunately some people on both ends got spanked by it.
To sum up:
Clearer cut tags = good
WB promo department = crack whores.
TBQ = doesn't consider ads for the show to be spoilers, but is still sorry if she spoiled people anyway
There. Now to take a shower and watch tonight's ep. Gay TV makes everything better. 8)
