Weekend update
Feb. 10th, 2003 12:34 pmSpent yesterday with
stakebait and
lucifrix. Much fun was had, though I wish I could have spent more time with them. Stupid flu.
Have made the decision to get another kitty. What sealed the deal is remembering that when I originally got Mac, I was working half days in the office, half days at home, so I was around for him a lot more. Now that I'm working full days in the office, he could use a playmate.
Spent last night researching local animal shelters. It's hard to do in my area because they got rid of the official cat-related shelters around here a couple of years ago, forcing cat lovers to do catch as catch can if they wanted a place to put unwanted kitties. So if I want to hit a proper shelter I'd need to go back to where I got Mac, which was ironically named Adopt A Dog. I liked them fine enough, but frankly I could do without the five thousand highway changes that I needed to do to get to that place. Esp if there are people closer.
So - researching I went.
I gotta say, not to be mean or anything but I can't help but feel that some rescue organizations need to pick like 2-3 things, tops, that they care about and then let it go. Yeah, in an ideal universe you'd be able to weed out every (to you) undesirable trait in a potential adoptive pet owner but in this universe you've got millions of unwanted pets. If somebody is ready to take the cat, don't deny them for some silly reason like they're going to fed the kitty dry food and you prefer moist.
I get it on the bigger stuff like indoors vs out, or spaying/neutering, or even declawing, but beyond those three really what's that important? I'm reminded of my sis-in-law who went to adopt a kitty from a rescue organization a few years back and let it slip either that she was getting married or about to have a kid (she was doing both at the time) and they denied her because the change of life had the possibility that she would give the cat up. Huh?
So I was thinking about this last night as I was checking out various web pages for rescue organizations. One threw me because it wanted me to fill out a form, to which they would pick my cat. Now had this been a foster-only organization where the cats are scattered around town and therefore do need some winnowing out before people look at them I would get it. But as far as I could tell they did have a central location where you could go meet the kitties so - huh? Look I appreciate the help but I know me better than you do. Let me pick a cat for me. Sure help me out since I do have needs (like a cat who will get along with other cats) but beyond that back off. Sheesh.
On a lighter note, one amused me because on the website it said "Come visit us and see our cats!" or words to that effect, but the only address that could be found began with "PO Box". Hmm. Must be some real small kitties.
Yet another one amused me b/c of the form they had to fill out. They had standard questions like name, address, living situation and so on. But one of the questions was "Where will the cat sleep?" Considering they already had a questions to cover the indoor vs. outdoor thing, I can't help but feel that the only answer here is "Where ever it wants to. It's a cat. Have you met these animals before?"
They also asked something like "How much are you planning on spending on the cat per year?" Now again, I can get it if they're trying to weed out people who think you can spend nothing because they're just planning on tossing the cat into the back yard and letting it fend for itself, but at which point isn't the better question something like "Are you aware that cats cost about X/year due to food and vet costs?" or some such. I mean planning to spend? "I dunno. It depends on how many catnip mice he stuffs in those little hidey holes I can't find."
But we shall see. I'll keep looking at the various shelters to see if I can find one that works for me. I'll also try animal control (amusement there: on their website they had a guinea pig up for adoption. Who sends a guinea pig to Animal Control? What, had it gone rabid and started to terrorize your wood shavings??) or just hit the paper for ads for people looking to give kitties away.
If all goes well, Mac will have a brother or sister come the end of the month.
