Long, fun weekend
Jan. 27th, 2003 01:05 pmYet another "still alive" post.
It's been a fun weekend so far. I enjoy these quick weekend trips to just hang out with family.
Woke up and watched part of the UN report. This is scary. I'm terrified to turn on the news now because it wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that Bush just stopped pretending to wait and simply launched a nuke on Iraq. It terrifies me how bad things have gotten.
In other news, I've been reading The Celluloid Closet during my odd moments of free time. I've seen the documentary a few times but never sat down with the book. I got it out of the library when prompted by a recent LJ discussion with some people who'd never before heard of the dead/evil/insane/cured gay stereotype. (BTW - I've been trying to make note of when the book talks about it, but honestly it's so accepted it's hard to narrow it down to a single passage or two. But I'll do my best when I'm all done.)
The interesting thing that came out of the reading, though, was that the book goes into the concept of the "sissy" character more than the documentary did, and I'm finding as I read that if Willow and Tara were (inadvertently or not) continuations of the dead/evil gay stereotype, then Wesley is actually a character who flies in the face of the "sissy" one. I'm finding the whole thing interesting, esp when you consider how the characters are also on separate shows.
When I get back home and get a chance after playing catch-up, I'm going to try to sit down and write out a whole discussion of Wes as the anti-Willow. Lots of interesting stuff to think and talk about, if you ask me. =)
Anyway, that's the scoop. Hope y'all are doing well and Happy Early Birthday to
stakebait!! (I know it's tomorrow but I'll be on a plane then, whaddya want?)
