Please pass the peas to a homosexual

thebratqueenI think it was Bob Smith who cracked the joke that when he came out to his family he did it over dinner by turning to his mom and saying 'Please pass the peas to a homosexual.' whereupon she immediately turned around and handed them to his father.
I was thinking of that today because at my UU church they did a service in honor of the fact that they're considering becoming a Welcoming Congregation. For those not in the know, a WC is basically an official decision to become gay-friendly. Apparently it's a year long process even in the best of times and we're coming in on the tail end of this year.
Anyway, the service today was in honor of that and it was just great. People shared about either being gay or having friends who were gay. I came out to the entire congregation as bi, and it was nice to see that other than a few people who blinked in surprise, nobody really cared. To me, that's the best reaction of all - "Meh". Because, honestly, it's not a big deal.
I'll confess to having a few teary moments though, and that was at the beginning when they did a special story for the kids about "What makes a family?" The gist of it being that families come in all shapes and sizes and one of those shapes is two parents of the same sex. It just moved me to see that it was such a non-issue that they were even going to talk to the kids about it. A lot of people will be gay-friendly but still won't like including kids in that. Not my church, yay!
It made a nice change of pace after hearing about the RC church and that stupid thing about not being able to tell the difference between gays and pedophiles. I swear it gets harder and harder to keep an open mind about the RC church.
