Okay, for [livejournal.com profile] zortified I'm posting the plot bunny I keep - no pun intended - rabbiting on about. Warning - there's a little backstory here because I did try to see if I could give birth to this one m'self. Also some minor season 3 spoilers so...

It started when I was thinking about Wes's sexuality on the show. All slashiness aside, this character is gay. If I had enough money to buy my way into an exec. producer status and give David G. an early retirement my first point of order at the very first story staff meeting would be "Let's do a story arc that shows Wes realizing he's gay. Moreover - he's got a crush on Angel."

I even had a vision in my head of how it would go - start up in September with things being normal. Then in Oct-Nov have Wes meet up with some guy who kick-starts his revealation. Play it off of the distance that grew between Angel and Wes in season 3 (this was before "Sleep Tight", not that ST contradicts this any). Wes knows Angel better than he knows himself - he knows Angel's interested in Cordy, he also knows Angel's not so interested in being his friend anymore or even in Wes as a boss anymore, but Wes muddles through the best he can anyway because it's better than facing the reality.

Enter the guy - maybe Wes meets him in a bookstore. The guy shows interest in Wes, maybe really appreciating Wes's knowledge of demons and languages. Suddenly Wes has somebody who's appreciating his talents, which is a far cry from the AI gang ever since Freddy "I can do anything except shut up" Sue came into town.

Move into November - the audience finds out this guy has more than friendship in mind for Wes. As part of a sweeps episode, Wes finds this out too. He's shocked, he's confused, but in the last or next to last ep of November sweeps he shares his first awkward kiss with the guy - and realizes it's not half bad.

Dec-Feb shows Wes discovering the relationship. He lies to the gang about spending nights at home alone, when he's really out on dates. There are more kisses. It's the WB so we only get veiled hints at possible further intimacy, but it's obvious Wes is wanting more. By the start of Feb, we know Wes has a boyfriend, and he's starting to know it too.

Then comes Feb sweeps and we start to know more - in a typical ME sweeps move the real emotions come to a head. The gang finds out Wes hasn't been honest with them. The guy Wes is dating turns out to not be so honest either - he's an old enemy of Angelus's, and he's using Wes as an in for his revenge. Wes finds out. He feels foolish and betrayed. His old instincts kick in as he tries to protect Angel at any cost to himself - desperately trying to keep his secret from the gang who he's sure won't understand any of it, especially Angel.

But Angel does find out. By the end of Feb there's a climactic fight - Angel, Wes, and the guy. Wes is forced to chose and he picks Angel. However by doing so the real truth is revealed - Wes is in love with Angel and always has been, and now not only does Wes know it, Angel knows it too.

The villan escapes before Wes and Angel can destroy him. Wes and Angel are alone. Wes is beyond emotion, unable to even speak because of what he and Angel now know.

Angel looks at him, and in the final moment of Feb sweeps, reveals to Wes this is never going to happen. He's straight. Always has been. At best they can - maybe - just be friends. The credits roll after we pause on the look on Wes's face as he watches Angel walk away.

How the season would end from there I have no idea. This plot bunny on crack didn't take me that far. If this was a real season 4, Angel would stay straight, that much we know - the WB would never accept a gay or even bi Angel. So somehow we'd need to resolve the A/W friendship in spite of all that. I know it could be done.

Now I was pondering this virtual season 4 idea when a voice in my head (I get those a lot) said "Well, dipshit, you write fanfic, why don't you just do the season yourself?" Which - hey - good question. Wouldn't be the first virtual season, right? Or possibly instead of a season 4 it could be a redo of season 3. Tie in the villan who uses Wes for an in with Holtz - say that Holtz sent in someone like Aubrey earlier, but it was a guy and the guy was more successful than she was.

But... this is a big plot bunny, and I'm notoriously bad with multi-part bunnies where I already know how at least 75% of the story turns out. It tends to satisfy my itch for the results, so I can't develop an emotional attachment to it.

OTOH - I do kinda like it. Maybe this is arrogant but I do think it's plausible angst for the show, and a plausible way to get Wes out of that god damned closet they've put him in.

So... who knows? It's up for grabs if anyone thinks they can give it, or even part of it, a good home.
