New Year's
GIP. And various updates.
NYE for me was, same as last year, at a party thrown by a friend of a friend who is spiffy enough to invite me along for the fun. I have to admit I like M's parties. They're big enough to be fun but not so big you might as well have gone to Times Square.
I'll also admit the party is interesting for me in my capacity as a people-watcher. I've said elsewhere (or I think I did) that very often I like sitting back and watching people, and in a crowd like this where I know some well, some kinda well and others not at all it makes for interesting observations in social psychology. I arguably could have been happy the whole night just sitting back with a drink and watching people, but then that tends to creep them out ;)
Things like this are also interesting for me because, I'll freely admit, I'm nowhere near
miss_edith's side of the Kinsey scale of social intereaction, wherein you have the ability to strike up a friendly conversation with damn near anyone, no matter how little you have in common. I'm not so bad that I won't talk to anyone, just that if things don't click in the first few sentences I'm more likely to subscribe to the catch and release program than I am to stick it out. Esp since god knows there's plenty of people we could both be talking with who would be more fun for the both of us.
Still, I could be much worse. Like the girl who shall remain nameless who I chatted with and, while trying to figure out where our various social circles crossed, figured out that Buffy was a common denominator and then proceeded to have the following conversation with me:
Her: So do you write that Spike/Buffy thing with
stakebait?
Me: No, that's
buffybot
Her: Oh, so do you do that -
Me: [figuring it out] Crossover thing. With Angel/Wes
Her: [flatly] Oh. Yeah. You know, I gotta say I find that whole Angel/Wes, guy/guy thing.... disgusting.
Me: [big fake smile] Yeah, well, different strokes, huh? *
(* - granted, the conversation's paraphrased a bit but you get the idea)
So hey, I may not be the best social butterfly in the room, but at least I don't go deliberately insulting people I've only just met in some misguided belief that this is the way to win friends and influence people. Obviously I wait to know the people first then insult them on an individual level.
Is quality control that much to ask, really?
The party itself was good food, great music and, sadly, only occasionally dancing. For some reason the crowd this year wasn't as dancy as last year, in spite of the fact that
miss_edith and friend put together a great mix CD for the occasion.
And, contrary to the rumors that
wolfling keeps trying to start, I was not as drunk as
miss_edith. I merely subscribed to
buffybot's theory that after a while it's a pain to remember which glass is yours, so just spend the time random sampling the various forms of orange juice you come across.
Quote of the night goes to
buffybot, when she declared "I am not a short, dumpy, Asian woman!"
New Year's Day was a world of dehydration. Which was ironic considering it was pouring out. I had a killer headache which I blame the weather for as much as the party.
But, offsetting this was pressies. I got an Angel calendar (which was good because I really wanted one but at the same time really didn't want to spend money on anything that had Fred in it. A pressie was the perfect solution). I also got the Angel board game, which is nothing like Buffy board game but I remain convinced it, too, can be retrofitted into something completey and utterly mental. I am also far too amused by the fact that they put mostly Angel quotes on the "Day" cards and mostly Wesley quotes on the "night" ones. I should probably be scared that I can recognize the quotes that easily.
I had to work today but it was a fairly low-key day so that was good. The only downside is that now I'm fighting off something and I definitely have a fever. Which now leads me to my old fogey moment of, damn it, I miss mercury thermometers! I used to have one and somehow lost it between my last apt and this one. So I dutifully bought a new one and found only digital. Except I hate digital because they can never take my temperature right! According to the reading I did earlier I'm at 97.7 So as far as it's aware not only do I not have a fever (in spite of all the symptoms of one which mysteriously go away when I take fever-reducing meds) but apparently I'm on my way to being dead. Way to go technology!
At least I have off tomorrow. During which time I will make soup and waffles. But not together. ;)
I considered a few resolutions this year. I'm not normally a resolution kind of person but I figured some couldn't hurt.
I thought about resolving to learn how to work the appliances in my friends' apartments, but
buffybot has wisely pointed out that this may be beyond my means.
A new exericse routine is one I can handle though. I tried the gym for a few months last year but with my work schedule it's just not doable. The only times I could go were the weekend, which meant bunching up the workouts and also meant not having a single day when I could just stay indoors if I wanted to. So this year brings an attempt to do a half hour of something each day right here in the house. Today I tried some yoga. Lemme tell you - those poses will kick your ass after a while. Which is good, that's just what I need. I figure once I get that down I'll move on to other things so that ideally I'll have two or three routines that I alternate during the week. Go me! ;)
Being girl-with-a-budget is also my resolution, but I'm not saying that too loud so I don't scare myself ;)
And, finally, I resolve to be even more of a brat in the new year.
That is all =)
