Been a while since I've done one of these.
I want it to be understood: if the internet had been around when I was a tween? THIS TOTALLY WOULD HAVE BEEN ME. Only instead of American Idol I would've been reacting to 90210 old skool version or Zorro on the Family Channel. I was never cool people. That's another take home lesson here in addition to the gratitude over how technology waited until I was at least in my obnoxious late teens/early 20s.
At the World Toilet Summet - what? Aren't you a member? - they discussed the next generation of toilets. Since the water-based ones we currently use aren't really sustainable, environmentally speaking. Though now that I've put it that way I feel like there's someone out there designing a toilet that, when you flush it, starts a recording of Patrick Stewart saying "Make it so."
More seriously and sobering, today is The Transgender Day of Remembrance. If nothing else you may want to spend a moment thinking of all those who've died because the world still has a lot of hate in it.
And speaking of things that happen because people skipped the day god handed out brains and souls, the American Family Association - or NAMBLA - has come out with a DVD just in time for the holidays! It's called They're Coming To Your Town. Who, Santa and his reindeer? No, silly! Gays! Gays and their agenda! Which is why Eureka Springs Arkansas is now the gayest city that ever did gay while gaying stuff.
Yeah I don't get it either. But on the upside I now have a vague interest in Arkansas which I promise you did not exist before. I mean peace, relaxation, history and sex? Throw in some chocolate and it's the best vacation ever!
Need some white noise while you work? Try iSerenity which loops ambiant sounds for you. The kicker is that in addition to things like the pitter patter of rainfall you can also have the clickety clack of typewriters and the, uh, shushity shush of a library. Sadly the library doesn't come with smell-o-vision.
STEAMPUNK CELLPHONE. It looks just as cool as it sounds. No pun intended. Elsewhere, Steampunk elephant! Man I love those.
Mary Flanagan helps design videogames with female heroines as well as an eye for how girls would like to play. And this is not an eye that says "Make it all pink!! With FASHION!" but actually studying how girls interact with games and therefore how to design games accordingly. It's amazing how long it takes stuff like this to happen.
Monty Python has their very own YouTube channel. I feel this is very appropriate considering how if they had started today they probably would've gone directly to YouTube without passing go.
Pictures of Paris in 1900 vs 2008. Both pretty and nifty.
If you haven't yet (and especially if you have a daughter) you need to watch Smart Girls at the Party. It's an online series made by Amy Poehler who felt that there needed to be more things out there that showed young girls doing their own thing and being awesome at it. Basically a response to all the things in the media where 10 year old girls get dolled up in kinderwhore's latest. The show is sponsored by Barbie which... yeah. But still, the show itself is awesome so try to ignore the ads and just watch the eps. (And be glad it wasn't sponsored by Bratz)
Michael Pollan, who wrote The Omnivore's Dilemma, wrote an open letter to the next president elect regarding how said president elect should deal with food and how it relates to the environment. Obama? totally read it. God I love him.
Want to design your own fabric? Spoonflower is here to help.
How to have sex in subcompact cars. Eyes on the prize, people. Eyes on the prize.
Finally, 5 Happiness Boosters That Do More Harm Than Good. I gotta admit they make some good points here.
