Bringing you the best in my magpie-like nature
So here's the thing:
christinenj got me into using Google Reader. One of the features of said reader is sharing items from your feeds with your Google Reader friends, complete with comments if you were so inclined. Naturally I can't keep my mouth shut on much, and really the only downside to this system that I have found is that all y'all aren't on Google Reader too (don't worry about linking me if you are, it won't change this).
Well gosh, I said to myself, if only I had some way I could share interesting links and articles with the folks I usually blog with.
Yeah, I'm slow.
Anyhoo, so here's me giving it a go. We'll see if this lasts once the new toy shine is off of it. In the meanwhile it's all behind a cut tag for ease of ignoring. Look to the tags for the post to get an idea what all is included.
Two characters won't be back on FNL next season. Click the link to find out who. I'll avoid the spoilers here so suffice it to say I understand the whys, but I think it sucks. Granted, so many characters on FNL have good stories that you don't want to see the end of. (Ignoring that whole I Know What Tyra and Landry Did Last Summer plot from last season, which I maintain never happened and was a dream ballet.)
As everyone knows, I eat only the finest organic food made from scratch and fortified with whole grains and the healing tears of unicorns. However if I did eat fast food (*cough*) I'd have extra reason to stop by McDonalds. Said reason being that the American Family Association is boycotting them for being too nice to gays. As they say, the enemy of the AFA is someone who's clearly doing something right. Also quarter pounders are tasty. Ahem. (Thanks to
lucifrix for the heads up on this one)
It's not that I mind PSAs about Female Genital Mutilation, it's that I mind these PSAs about it. Salon's Broadsheet covers a good chunk of reasons why. Though for me I must say that what really cheeses me off about the PSA in question is - dude, we know. Even if there are women who are unaware of female genital mutilation specifically, I daresay damn near all women are aware that having a vagina is one of the main reasons women are targeted for violence. So don't make us be the ones who have to jerk defensively when we're already in a vulnerable position. Go stick some of those pictures of razors in jock straps and then we'll talk.
(For, IMO, better PSAs done by Amenesty, take a look here and here. Note how I think everyone can cringe while seeing this, and it's not about making women specifically feel like shit.)
Speaking of misogyny in advertising, I'd almost hate to link to this ad for suits which naturally involves a man in a suit... STRANGLING A WOMAN IN HER BRA AND PANTIES, but I like for people to understand that this kind of shit still happens. We're not as far into the happy wilds of equality for the sexes as we'd like to think.
Trying to save money? Get a credit card design that you're ashamed of. Granted that's a lot of steps when "Leave the card at home" would do, but if you're getting a new card anyway it's something to think of.
Does your writing pass the Bechdel test? That's when:
1) there are at least two named female characters, who
2) talk to each other about
3) something other than a man.
If you're trying to get into the movie industry you may find yourself encouraged to fail this test. Though I wonder if the same could be said for television or publishing, where there are more niches to fill.
I don't know anyone who spends too much time on social networking sites, but if I did they might be interested in how to use them more productively.
I don't know that I'd use one, but the notebook portable grill just looks nifty.
I don't know anyone as OCD as I am but if I did they might find Timetoast useful for making timelines. Say, if someone wanted to keep track of plots for stories and such. Ahem.
The Vatican says that the Church of England's vote for women bishops will be an "obstacle" to reconciliation between Anglicans and Catholics. I really hope that CoE replies back with something like "Oh, you mean our religion which we separated from yours on purpose isn't making you happy with how we handle things? Wow, we are going to lose so much sleep over that. Really. Honest. Cake?"
Finally, Ten Tactics for improving your luck. Per the article: "To me, luck occurs when a positive and fairly unexpected event happens in your life, whether it be financial or otherwise. Thus, improving your luck means increasing the chances of such positive events happening - and also increasing the chances that you’ll be able to take advantage of them." (thanks to
kajivar for this one)
